Cheese!

Back in the 1970s, the Carter administration started buying cheese to support farmers. The Reagan government in the 1980s began handing out cheese to needy people as part of a food assistance program. Since then, the surplus has been sold to fast food chains.

The 1.4 billion pounds of cheese still exists in cold storage holdings but it is no longer completely owned by the government but by private companies.
