Before the first World War, Germany had colonies in German East Africa (now Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi) and German South-West Africa (now Namibia).

According to worldlanguages.com German is now the language of 32 per cent of the population of Namibia. There is no mention of German as a language in any of the other former German colonies, and I would think it unlikely that it is spoken elsewhere in Africa (except of course by individuals who have learned it for various reasons.)

So the only African country which 'speaks German' in any real sense seems to be Namibia.

"Nataler Deutsch" is a variety of German spoken in KwaZulu-Natal, a province of the Republic of South Africa.
An estimated 12,000 people speak German or a German variety as a first language in South Africa, mostly originating from different waves of immigration during the 19th and 20th centuries. One of the largest communities consists of the speakers of "Nataler Deutsch", a variety of Low German concentrated in and around Wartburg. The South African constitution identifies German as a "commonly used" language and the Pan South African Language Board is obligated to promote and ensure respect for it.
