According to this Edison site, it isn't known precisely what the tattoo meant.

Probably conected to the fact that in 1877 Edison patented an electric tattoo marking pencil.

Was he left handed? According to many sites Edison was dyslexic so he maybe he had tried to tattoo his wife's name in Morse code and did not know how so spell dashes
