Portrait of Anne, Countess of Chesterfield
By Thomas Gainsborough
Author Award for May 2024
One of the most prolific British portraitists of the eighteenth century (along with his rival, Sir Joshua Reynolds), Thomas Gainsborough was a name in high demand amongst the British elite. This particular portrait is of Anne Stanhope, wife of the 5th Earl of Chesterfield. Gainsborough's oeuvre contains many such depictions of British aristocrats.
"Portrait of Anne, Countess of Chesterfield" includes a companion portrait of her husband, and the two pieces remained together until 1959, when this painting was sold to the J. Paul Getty Museum.
