That's okay. Maybe it's an interdisciplinary class.

I'm kind of curious what people think about questions that end up in Duel about TV shows. I used to watch the Mary Tyler Moore show with my wife every week. I just played the duel and scored a 235, while my opponent scored in the upper 300s. The questions were very episode and minor character specific. Questions like what color dress did Mary wear in such and such an episode, and so on. I'm wondering if there is a minimum percentage of correct answers for a quiz question to make it as a duel question.
Who can remember those answers from 40+ years ago?

In the larger main categories, there is a "filter" on what questions in quizzes can be in Duels. But in the smaller, niche subcategories, except for obvious exceptions like eliminating fill in the blank questions, pretty much any question that is in the source quizzes in the subcategory can appear in the Duels, regardless of the difficulty level of the question. So extremely nitpicky questions definitely show up in the Duels in the smaller subcategories. I remember watching the "Mary Tyler Moore" show as a kid. It was a great show. It can still be seen in reruns on things like "Me TV". But questions about what color dress Mary was wearing in such-and-such episode is definitely not a question I (or probably anyone, for that matter) would like. In fact, that sort of question on the original source quiz would probably earn the quiz a low rating from me. I honestly don't know why a quiz writer would ask such a question in the first place. But it happens all the time. It is less common in more recently-written quizzes than the older ones, but it still happens. The data base for small subcategories is just too small for a "filter" mechanism to be employed for any Topic Mashes (or Duels) for such subcategories.

Thanks Brian, and also, thanks for reminding me of my advanced age.

Yeah, just to show what Brian alludes to in numbers; that sub category only contains 14 quizzes comprising 165 questions in total. Bearing in mind that some of the questions will likely get excluded completely for being unsuitable as stand alone questions that is an incredibly small pool of questions and so any usual selection criteria based on difficulty probably goes out the window.

I get tired of losing Duels by 30 or less. This evening I lost 6 and won only 1, by 30 or less.

You probably get matched with the toughest players out there, Mark, I mean, you are among the elite warlords of knowledge, bro. I know Mix has mentioned facing exactly the same thing that you spoke of, and I know she is among the elite warlords of the Duel arena. Probably every other arena around here as well, for that matter. I hear you though, brother, that has got to be very disappointing for anyone to lose 6 games by less than 30 points in one set. But there is what I like to call a balance of nature in this game, just like with lots of other things in life. Sooner or later this balance of nature will come around your way and you will have days where you will have more close wins than close losses.

I got lucky today, none of my four losses were by 30 or less.

Duels

I waited for almost two hours for the system to find someone to beat me by six points in my "The Simpsons" Duel, 757-751. D'oh

I have a ten page paper due on Monday evening for class. I finished the paper this morning and the Citations page this afternoon.

Mark, does your word processing program have setup for formatting outlines? If so, you might try have that running while you write your next paper. The program I had automatically alphabetized listings. That way when I wrote papers, every time I needed to cite it, I put the info in right away. When the paper was done, so was the citation page.

I have never tried to do the citations while I'm writing the paper. We use MLA (for this professor) with intext citations inclusive of page numbers.

MLA is pretty much the standard. It's also what I used most of the time. I've had to use three different types of citations and what I described in previous post worked for all of them.

Try it. It can save you a lot of time.

Different professors and different subjects use different styles. Religion used Footnotes.
History used Chicago Style.
Literature used MLA and APA, depending on Professor.

It used to be very time consuming and frustrating, now it just takes time.

Okay, Mark. As I said, I used different styles too. I found the way I mentioned to be easier and to save time. But it seems you like to do it the way you are doing it. Sorry to offer you a hint to make it easier.

No, I didn't mean it as you apparently took it.
What I meant was, I am done with papers for this semester. I will definitely try it your way next time.
Thank you, and sorry, if I unintentionally offended.
