I actually read "A Christmas Carol" all the way through. What's the longest book you have read all the way through?

I always read them all the way through, and am not sure which was actually the longest story I've read. A couple of lengthy novels I remember reading were: "Outlander" and "Pillars of the Earth"

This sounds crazy, but...Les Miserables by Victor Hugo. It is not as long as some books, but well above average and yawn inducing.

The Stand by Stephen King.

I cannot remember a thing from it now.

I think it's "The Stand" for me too, though I can't remember if "It" was longer. Inevitably it's something by Stephen King around 1000 pages long.

I've also made it through the Bible.

"Clarissa" by Samuel Richardson. It is four volumes long--maybe about 2000 pages?

Not sure, but I think Stephen King's, "The Stand" might be the longest. Was "Under the Dome" longer?

Yep Clarissa. It took a week of sitting back on a steamer chair in the back garden doing little else.

OTOH it took me about a year and a half to read Henry James' The Golden Bowl including something like four attempts to plough through the first sentence/paragraph/page.

The Stand seems to be a popular one, doesn't it? I've never shied away from long books but that one was a commitment.

Oh yeah....the thread asked for the longest book, and I was thinking novel. I have read the Bible all the way through, many times. Each time, it seems like a different book because I rarely see it the same way twice.

I've also read all of the Stephen King novels, which were all worth the read. The movie versions of most of them, however....not so much. "Desperation" was one of my favorites and a long novel, but the movie was terrible.

Now, for REALLY lengthy books....how about a set of encyclopedia. Anybody out there old enough to remember reading THOSE?

Gone With the Wind. I've started so many others; but I usually read half of it and then skip to the last chapter to see how it ends. We're the television generation, Instant gratification.

Hard to say. Probably Bill James' Historical Baseball Abstract.

Apparently the longest book for me is A Storm of Swords, book 3 of the Song of Fire and Ice trilogy. Over 960 pages. Even though Tolkien meant the Lord of the Rings to be one book, I don't think it counts as just one book.
