I always read them all the way through, and am not sure which was actually the longest story I've read. A couple of lengthy novels I remember reading were: "Outlander" and "Pillars of the Earth" Reply #301. Nov 10 11, 5:18 PM |

This sounds crazy, but...Les Miserables by Victor Hugo. It is not as long as some books, but well above average and yawn inducing. Reply #303. Jan 20 12, 8:23 PM |

I think it's "The Stand" for me too, though I can't remember if "It" was longer. Inevitably it's something by Stephen King around 1000 pages long. Reply #305. Jan 27 12, 8:47 PM |

"Clarissa" by Samuel Richardson. It is four volumes long--maybe about 2000 pages? Reply #307. Feb 01 12, 6:47 PM |

Not sure, but I think Stephen King's, "The Stand" might be the longest. Was "Under the Dome" longer? Reply #308. Mar 09 12, 2:49 PM |

Yep Clarissa. It took a week of sitting back on a steamer chair in the back garden doing little else. OTOH it took me about a year and a half to read Henry James' The Golden Bowl including something like four attempts to plough through the first sentence/paragraph/page. Reply #312. The Stand seems to be a popular one, doesn't it? I've never shied away from long books but that one was a commitment. Reply #314. Mar 26 12, 11:40 AM |

Oh yeah....the thread asked for the longest book, and I was thinking novel. I have read the Bible all the way through, many times. Each time, it seems like a different book because I rarely see it the same way twice. I've also read all of the Stephen King novels, which were all worth the read. The movie versions of most of them, however....not so much. "Desperation" was one of my favorites and a long novel, but the movie was terrible. Now, for REALLY lengthy books....how about a set of encyclopedia. Anybody out there old enough to remember reading THOSE? Reply #315. Mar 29 12, 7:27 PM |

Gone With the Wind. I've started so many others; but I usually read half of it and then skip to the last chapter to see how it ends. We're the television generation, Instant gratification. Reply #317. May 06 12, 9:55 AM |

Apparently the longest book for me is A Storm of Swords, book 3 of the Song of Fire and Ice trilogy. Over 960 pages. Even though Tolkien meant the Lord of the Rings to be one book, I don't think it counts as just one book. Reply #320. May 07 12, 4:41 PM |
