Subject: The Grand National

The biggest horse race in the world jumps off on Saturday at Aintree race course in Liverpool and all the once a year punters will be filling the bookies to bursting point. I have picked Black Apalachi, Butler's Cabin and Cornish Sett up to now, using scientific methods of course, I would like to see the weird and wonderful ways you pick yours and what you have come up with.

I don't bet, am literally the kiss of death when I bet on the National, and I like horses. Previously it was on daft things like the names or the jockey's colours, nothing very scientific!

The biggest horse race in the world is The Kentucky Derby.

The Richest is the Dubai Cup which pays $6 million to the winner.
Anton, The Kentucky Derby is the Biggest in the US but the Grand National is a steeplechase, And the biggest! :)

As far as choosing winners - I Used to follow parentage and only bet on Our Melbourne Cup, could always have a horse in the first three home so a trifecta was the order of the day! - but as the 'lines' became much harder to follow I've dropped that method.
If I'm at the track I like to wander the field and look at the horses running - and can often see a horse that will pay. It's a good game - choose a horse in each race (not necessarily bet on it) and see how it runs.
Occasionally I've been sorry I Didn't put money on it!
Sometimes I choose by trainer/jockey combinations.
As for choosing The Winner? It's Always bound to be a horse! :D

I wouldn't normally give it a thought, and I've never been inside a bookie's - my loss - but I have joined in sweepstakes. Wherever I've worked, someone has put the names onto bits of paper and put them in a hat. You handed over your half a crown, or your pound, or whatever it was at the time, and you picked a name out of the hat. I can't remember ever winning anything, which is OK, because I wouldn't have anyway.

A man I know has devoted a whole bedroom to the study of form. He has books, magazines, and a computer full of horsey information. He has got a proper job. Just not many friends.

the derby is world known. I have never heard of this one being talked about.

That would be a good reason for starting up a separate thread about the Kentucky Derby. (The Derby is a British race.)

"National Velvet"? Load of old codswallop but it does feature the National. I think the English Grand National is probably the most famous National Hunt Race in the world. Definitely not one for wimps, and that includes the spectators.

I would have loved to have had my pocket money on this one in 1967 - perhaps not steeplechasing's finest hour though!

Ok AntonLaVey the Kentucky Derby is a big race, every one has a big race, it's not about that, it's about the way people pick their horses, a bit of fun, you know. Thanks MarchHare007 for the info and pointing out it was a steeple chase, thats over the jumps in case anyone asks where the church is and lesley can you get a tip of that guy with racing form for wallpaper, he might give us the winner.

Bernie, I'd love to if I thought it would help, but he never answers the door or the phone, because, he says, it won't be for him: and he's right, it never is. And he still trots out to the same old job every day, which I don't think he'd do if he were rich. So I hope you won't mind if I try not to disturb him from the room, where he is, in fact, indistinguishable from the wallpaper.

I know a couple of people who are form 'experts'. They tend to be quite voluble about their winnings, less so about their losses!

Lesley, does he actually manage anything positive with all his data - or does it just keep him off the streets? ;)

I have never bet on a horse race but I have watched them. Here in the states when Lafitt Pincay would race I would always pick him, instead of looking at what horse he was riding.

Okay Bernie!

I've 'checked the form' and I discounted a few Babies and a few Oldies and a few Heavyweights and some that have no idea what 4 miles Looks Like and I like Comply or Die, Snowy Morning and Silver Birch with Zabenz 'cause I like the look of him.

I usually do quite well with the Grand National. My tips are :- 1.The horse should be at least 8 years old.
2.It should have already won a race this season of at least 3 miles. The Grand National is 4 1/2 miles and has 30 fences/ ditches, so the horse must have proven stamina.
3.It should not be carrying too much weight - preferably a maximum of about 11st 4lb.
4. The nearest equivalent in fences is Haydock park, so a horse that has won a long distance race at Haydock which meets the other criteria stands a good chance.

After watching Makybe Diva make history here with HER THREE Melbourne Cup Wins - I like to give 'run befores' a look.
Admittedly racing on the flat Can be less perilous!

Here's a question - with a Jump Start are the horses assigned a specific order left to right do they Just Line Up?
