Subject: The Grand National

The biggest horse race in the world jumps off on Saturday at Aintree race course in Liverpool and all the once a year punters will be filling the bookies to bursting point. I have picked Black Apalachi, Butler's Cabin and Cornish Sett up to now, using scientific methods of course, I would like to see the weird and wonderful ways you pick yours and what you have come up with.

Thanks daver852, veroncavee and Mixmatosis, although I picked the winner and the fourth I didn't win much. I had bigger bets on other horses like Blaklion that was brought down by another horse at the first fence. I shall return, (next year).

Winning anything at all on the Grand National is an achievement. It's a highly unpredictable race most of the time.

Hello all you punters out there. It is time for the 2019 Grand National race run at Aintree, Liverpool, England. This years race has two past winners among the runners and lots of others that have been placed and a few that were unlucky.
Tiger Roll won in 2018 but is at the ridiculously short price of 7/2. One For Arthur won in 2017 and is 22/1. Pleasant Company 9th in 2017 & 2nd in 2018 is 25/1. Anibale Fly was 4th in 2018 and is 10/1. Blaklion was 4th in 2017 but was brought down in 2018 is 33/1. Milansbar was 5th in 2018 and is 50/1. Captain Red Beard unseat the jockey in 2018 and is 33/1. I will be backing some of these but my main bet will be on Lake View Lad who ran well at Cheltenham a few weeks ago and is 12/1. Some of the horses above may not run as there may be too many entered and the race has a limit of 40 runners. It will be decided a week before the race which is run at 5.15pm on Saturday the 6 April.

Great win for him. The only one I backed that paid out anything was Rathvinden that came 3rd.

I haven't bet on the Grand National for many years and it seems to me that they've changed the payout system in that time. Horses that are 'placed' seem to get the same payment now (1/5 of the odds). Years ago I'm sure 2nd paid out more than 3rd and 3rd more than 4th. I spent nearly half of my winnings on an Magnum (ice lolly). Lol.

You know how to spend a big win, lol. I bring this post back to life every year and it is the first winner I have given for a while so I am glad to save myself some embarrassment at last. Tiger Roll will only be 10 years old next year and may equal Red Rum's 3 wins. Watch this space and you may be able to get a magnum (Champagne) next year.

The pay-out for placed horses has been the same for years. Some bookies pay 1/4 odds and others pay 1/5 odds, a lot depends on how many runners there are and if the race is a handicap or not. What has changed is how many places they pay out on, today Ladbrokes paid out on the first 6 places on the Grand National.

Oooh, I didn't know that. It's a pity our next horses came in 14th and 17th. Altogether the family bet on 8 horses but 5 of them didn't finish. It's a tough race, the Grand National.

That poor horse 'Up for Review' 'injured itself fatally' at the first fence they said, which is a euphemistic way of saying that it had to be put down. It looks to me as though the fences are more safely constructed than they used to be. There used to be lots of horse losses and jockey injuries in the past. I read that the owners of 'Up for Review' had lost 2 other horses in different races recently, and as Up for Review fell at the first fence, you wonder whether the owners aren't putting horses in races when they are not ready.

The fences are a lot smaller than they used to be but just as difficult for horses not good enough, entered by owners who should know better.

A successful Grand National then? Only one horse to kill! Its the poor bloody horses I feel sorry for, they have no choice in the matter, whereas their human owners, trainers and Jockey stand to make mega bucks.

And a horse that falls is not a winner so is disposable - one less mouth to feed. I did feel guilty once I'd placed the bets, and wondered whether I'd do it again next year.

The hopeful news was that lots of horses were 'pulled up' which can happen for many reasons including that the jockeys feel the horses can't continue or it wouldn't be fair to push them to continue if they don't have a chance of winning or are struggling. This seems to happen more now than it did years ago so I think the jockeys do have more consideration for the welfare of the horses these days.

It is Grand National day in the UK on Saturday April 10 2021. Last year's race was canceled and they run a virtual race so I didn't put my selections on here for your benefit. I will be backing these horses this year.

Anibale Fly 25/1
Bristol De Mai 20/1
Milan Native 33/1
Potters Corner 25/1
Shatou Flyer 33/1

These are today's prices but they may go up or down. Good luck if you back any of them.
