Subject: The Grand National

The biggest horse race in the world jumps off on Saturday at Aintree race course in Liverpool and all the once a year punters will be filling the bookies to bursting point. I have picked Black Apalachi, Butler's Cabin and Cornish Sett up to now, using scientific methods of course, I would like to see the weird and wonderful ways you pick yours and what you have come up with.

Stew, they just line up.
I remember one year when the starting tape didn't work properly and got wrapped round some of the jockeys. The race had to be abandoned in the end because some horses had run quite a fair distance before they could be stopped, so a re-start would not have been fair.

"Lesley, does he actually manage anything positive with all his data - or does it just keep him off the streets? ;)"

Let me think. He has learnt the art of blending with the wallpaper - does that count? It's an old, good friend of mine he's moved in with, and it gives him somewhere to bolt to when humans visit.

No, I think it's just the lazy man's allotment: a bolthole without the hard work, or carrots and turnips to cart home. I don't even think he bothers betting. Or, if he bets, he doesn't tell anyone about it, even if he wins. Especially if he wins, methinks.

Here is a bit of Grand National nostalgia - Red Rum's Song.

The National that was abandoned, some horses completed the whole course and the jockey punched the air in triumph, boy was he upset when they told him he hadn't won. Can anyone remember the name of the horse that won the race that never was?

Well remembered Duck, I think it would have won the race that year, it was one of the fancied runners. I might try a forecast this year with 3 horses, any 2 to finish 1st & 2nd, I used to get a few up some years ago.

I usually pick 4 and back them each way. I like horses with odds of at least 10-1 otherwise it isn't worth backing them.

Sorry guys and gals, cannot get excited over the Grand National. I am one of those who thinks that if horses were meant to fly they would have been born with wings. Do not bet on the race, do not watch the race live or even the highlights. My partner watches it and has a bet, I stay out of the way.

Never seen a flying horse, I bet it would win easy. Oh by the way if you have no interest in the Grand National, why bother leaving a comment?

Bernie - are you going to Aintree to watch the race as you live so close? I have never been but I have been to Haydock many times.

Hey Duck, although I am on the Merseyside board I live in Leicestershire but still regard Merseyside as my home so I registered on that board. Wont be going to the races, only ever been to one race meeting , that was at Chester years ago when I lived in Rock Ferry.

I've been to Chester, my worst day's racing ever.
I couldn't pick one winner.
It's a very unique racecourse - circular and very tight, anti-clockwise if I remember correctly.
The most distinguishing thing I remember is the high Roman walls surrounding it.
Could Chester racecourse be the oldest in the UK?

Duck, out the 5 horses you gave which one is your main tip (Companero will be balloted out). I dont usually do other peoples tips but I might have a few groats on it, if it's a good price tomorrow.

Do what i will try for the national put on betting slip 1st past the post. And no Chester is not the oldest race course, i believe that honour belongs to Ascot but as my old grey cells are a bit muddl;ed of late you need to check that.

I stand corrected and am totally amazed when i found the following. ... Chester officially began to organise horseracing on the Roodee, making it the oldest ... Options vary from titling a race, on-course branding

Looking at today's paper I have now picked another 4, My Will, Hear The Echo, Rambling Minister and Brooklyn Brownie. If I can't win something with 7 horses I shall give up betting for life.

Well there's a surprise result, Mon Mome at 100-1, the first 100-1 winner since 1967. Sorry Sue, one of mine came 3rd but I done it to win. Well thats it I give up on horse race betting, well on the Grand National anyway, till next year when I am bound to get the winner. I will be back then with my selections, for which I am sure you can't wait.
