Subject: Bus Ride Renewal Challenge

Posted by: Terry
Date: Mar 16 10

While the replacement of low-ranked quizzes is a continuing goal, preparation of extra quizzes to introduce variety for the tourists is also important now that the Bus Ride is well-established. Some tourists have been around the world over ten times, and even nice quizzes get repetitive. The lowest-ranked quiz currently used for the tour has a ranking that is roughly in the top third of all quizzes, so replacement is not an urgent matter, but we would still like to have new quizzes of a suitable quality to use as replacements, to provide a bit of diversity for those players who have played every day since the beginning, and who have probably memorised the answers to the current quizzes.

If you create a new quiz on a Bus Ride country, get it placed online, and have it place within a reasonable ranking, it may be rotated in to provide a more diverse program. Should your quiz manage a higher ranking than the current entry, it could become the permanent fixture, waiting for a future challenger. As an added bonus, we have modified the ratings system to give all quizzes in our rotation a ratings bump.

Feel free to use this thread to also "claim" a country so that you don't duplicate someone else's effort, and make sure to follow along with our later posts and updates to make sure that everything is in order. We look forward to seeing what you can come up with!

This link will show you what the ranking is for each of our current country quizzes.

Some of us have been on the Bus for almost 12 years. I'd like to see every quiz written in 2010 or earlier replaced. Theoretically, we have played some of the quizzes 22 times.

There are actually only a handful that have been there the entire time. Later, when I am looking at the revised listing, I will make a list of those countries for those who are interested. Most countries now have two possible quizzes, and have had rotations made. As someone who plays every day (except when I am unable to get to a computer), I am quite aware of the need for variety, but only when there is a suitable qui. I have decided that I will only rotate in quizzes with at least a blue star - but current quizzes (after today's planned rotation) are all silver, gold or red, and I am reluctant to replace a red-start quiz that is old with a new blue-star quiz unless the new one has something strongly appealing when considered from the tourist perspective.

Maybe we should make an informal goal on here, and a new list, to get one of the new formats in every country.

2010 was the year when the big renewal happened, and a large number of our current quizzes were written then, replacing the older and sometimes really boring quizzes used at the start. Most of them have red or gold stars, and no really good contender to replace them except boredom for the repeat visitors. It doesn't make sense to make the experience worse for the new players just to keep things fresh for the veterans. So I want to see some new quizzes, with something to offer, not just the ones that have been submitted already, and are not as well received by players as the older ones.

So I think it would make a great project to try and get quizzes in the new formats. I already try to select a picture quiz over a plain MC one, when that is possible. I have noted that a number of 9-for-10 quizzes from ages ago remain very popular, but they mostly don't have a lot of information, being so old. I expect a match quiz would be popular, but could be tricky to construct. I see a lot of possibility for using the label format, and I am sure that authors can find suitable buckets for a country - is it a food, a kind of clothing or a traditional musical instrument, for example. I would love to see some of these, and happily rotate out all of my lovingly-constructed quizzes that have been doing their job for over ten years!

I changed my mind when doing today's refresher rotation. (I change quizzes as the come online and are ready to replace the current quiz, but only sporadically do a big overhaul to rotate using the available quizzes.) I changed my mind from what I posted yesterday, and have included some blue-star quizzes to replace the red, gold or silver quiz that was there. But I have not rotated in any of the 'available' quizzes with no stars.

If anyone can see the list of quizzes at the link that stopped working sometime ago, you will see a number of quizzes listed in red due to a low ranking. Some of those are temporary for variety, some are because Terry set that bar at a ranking that is higher than blue star, which I have decided to include. They are decent quizzes.

If you can see the list, you will also see that almost all of the quizzes have a red highlight due to their age. Terry set this to flag anything more than 5 years old - and by now, that is almost everything!

I think it is time for a concerted effort here in the lounge to produce new quizzes for the Bus Ride, using the new formats available. It would be fantastic to have the tour renewed every 195 days, with a new quiz in a different format for each country. In other words, rather than just writing a MC quiz about the country, you would write a Label quiz (maps with cities, mountain ranges, rivers, etc. to identify should be easy to create, and the information would make them of interest to tourists); or maybe you are a history fan, and want a timeline (but I would not recommend ordering cities in size - not only does it change over time, but players tend to dislike numbers quizzes); how about a bucket quiz, where players might identify (for example, based on a quiz I just wrote) which island of the Philippines you need to visit to see a particular animal. There must be a lot of ways that we can create exciting new quizzes for the tourists!

This is just a thought for now. Keep your eyes open to see if we can come up with a concrete challenge for a team effort.

Unfortunately I got an "Access Denied" message when I clicked on the link. However, I'd really love to write a few quizzes for the Bus Ride using the new formats, and will definitely have a try once I have finished working on the quizzes I currently have in progress.

Within the next couple days we'll get something formalized and start travelling again. ;)

I got the "Access Denied" message too. I like the idea of trying some of the new formats, they definitely put a different twist on things.

I offer my Australia quiz to the Bus Ride, It's a new label quiz.
It appears also to be the first one to use a map that I am aware of (although I could be wrong about that).

I have noted the new Australia quiz - I watch for everything that might be useful for the tourists - and will evaluate its suitability in about a month, assuming it gets enough plays to have a star rating. Australia is one of the few countries with a surfeit of red-star quizzes available, one of which just got added to the tour for its first time, so Australia won't be changing again for a while. But I am keen to get new formats into play!
