Subject: Military commanders of merit.

Posted by: trojan11

This is not a thread dedicated to the famous commanders of history. We all know of Napoleon, Alexander, Saladin, Rommel, Patton and so on. However, throughout history there have been many military commanders of note, but who have never really come into the public eye.
Does anyone have regard for an unsung hero of the past. The kind of commander that did well, sometimes brilliantly, but never reached the public's attention?
One of favourites is Gotthard Heinrici (generaloberst) of WW2. He was the man tasked by Hitler to prevent the Soviets from crossing the Oder. Heinrici's efforts to defend Berlin border upon near genius, I think. He also quite successfully defied Hitler and his cronies.

Finnish sniper Simo Häyhä. Although he only went from corporal to second lieutenant.

More than 500 confirmed kills. A true sniper, preferring to use the iron sight rather than telescopic. In earlier days, and I mean up to the late sixties, if you needed a telescopic sight, then, you were in no way a true sniper.

I should have said that if you used a telescopic sight, you were in no way 'regarded' as a true sniper. Also, the above was not an axiom used or agreed upon by the military forces of all nations.

I have to point out two individuals in this post.

Karl Friedrich Max von Müller - Captain of the first SMS Emden.

Hellmuth von Mücke - Executive Officer of same SMS Emden.

Hugh O'Neill who was the cleverest military strategist in Ulster. He kept the English from taking over Ireland entirely for a long time. After his death there was no-one equal to him to replace him, and Ulster became one of the most English of Irish provinces, being planted with English and Scottish settlers so that the Irish could never rule it again.

General Fox Conner of the First World War American Army. He may not have commanded troops but he was instrumental in getting the Army built up and trained to General Pershing's standards

What about Nathaniel Greene, with all he did after taking over for Gates and keeping Cornwallis in check and the South in American hands?

Is Patton too big of a name to be brought into this discussion?
