None, so far, but I am going to New York and Washington in April with some responsibility of a bunch of underaged students. Hey, I am so afraid! And how do I, an hyperactive personality, survive 9 hours on the plane?

I might have written about it somewhere, but please forgive me, I am full of that:)

When I was a kid, our family vacation each summer was car trips through the western U.S. I got to see a lot of the states then. The only states I have never been in are Alaska, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana.

I have been to 48 of the states, missing Hawii and Alaska. Jolana, I went as a parent volunteer with my son's school choir to Germany, Austria and on that trip we visited Cesky Krumlov in the Czech Republic. I remember it as a beautiful area and the people we met were great! I hope you are able to have a good experience when you visit the USA. The flight wasn't too bad, we were encouraged to sleep most of the way over and they had plenty of movies and such for the way back. That was in 2005. Best of luck to you!

I used to drive a truck OTR so I've seen most but not all of the states. Never seen any of the New England states or Alaska. Also never seen either Dakota, Wisconsin or Minnesota. Didn't drive the truck to Hawaii but I did go there on my latest honeymoon.

Sadly I have only managed to visit four states so far!

I lived in California from 1981 to 1985, and have been to the neighbouring states of Nevada and Arizona. I have been to Hawaii a few times and nearly got deported the last time (2008).

I know Lesley will want details, so to cut a VERY long story short, it was because, when I lived in California in the 1980's, I was a legal resident alien with a green card. I didn't know that when you leave, you have to turn it in (haven't yet met anyone with a green card who actually knows that). So when I tried to re-enter on holiday in 2008 (23 years later), I was officially detained in Honolulu while it all got sorted out. It sounds like an awful experience, but actually the Honolulu Homeland Security/Immigration people were absolutely wonderful and it now makes for a good story at parties.

MotherGoose, you read my mind. That's astonishing, that they would still want your green card back after 23 years!

Davegrilla, what are all those letter? (They look like a mathematical formula.)

Just noticed - PA appears twice in Davegrilla's list. Pascal? Polyacetylene? Pamela Anderson?

"MotherGoose, you read my mind. That's astonishing, that they would still want your green card back after 23 years!"

I got to Honolulu, went through Customs and Immigration; they looked on their computer and asked "Where is your green card?" and I replied "At home (back in Australia) in the filing cabinet. Why?"

I had, of course, kept it as a souvenir, along with other "souovenirs" like expired passports. And apparently I needed to present it to get back into the States. Meanwhile, my husband and daughter were waiting for me to join them in San Francisco and I had no way of letting them know that I'd been detained in Hawaii. You can imagine the stress levels. But, as I said before, it all turned out okay in the end, thanks to the great staff in Honolulu (not sure I would have been treated as well on the mainland). When I got back to Australia, I had to turn it in to the American Consulate in Perth.

Lesley, They are the state abbreviations. I was trying to save time, but I will list them for you.

(PA was listed twice by accident. I was remembering past road trips and Pennsylvania was visited more than once)

CT- Connecticut
MA- Massachusetts
NY- New York
NJ- New Jersey
VT- Vermont
NH- New Hampshire
ME- Maine
RI- Rhode Island
PA- Pennsylvania
MD- Maryland
DE- Delaware
(DC)- Washington D.C. (I know its not a state)
VA- Virginia
NC- North Carolina
SC- South Carolina
GA- Georgia
FL- Florida
OH- Ohio
IN- Indiana
IL- Illinois

I've been to all the lower states except the far northeastern such as Maine, Rhode Island, Vermont and such. And not the two most famously beautiful, Hawaii and Alaska.

My travel pin map has begun to embarrass me, it's so clearly a map of wanderlust.

Davegrilla, belated thanks for the names. I know they're state abbreviations, and of course they save writing time for most Americans, but they don't save thinking time for most non-Americans. It's a bit like listing the countries you've visited by their international registration numbers:
CDN B BIH E F HR I M MC MK MNE P SLO SRB TN USA
or by their internet domain extensions:
ca be ba es fr hr it mt mc mk me pt sk rs tn us.

Argh - I've just remembered another one - Massachusetts! My honeymoon started in Manhattan and was mostly spent in Norwich, Connecticut, but we also visited a cousin in Boston.

So my list has now blossomed to
Connecticut,
Massachusetts,
Pennsylvania,
New York,
New Jersey, and
Rhode Island.
Till I remember another one!

I've been to all of them except Alaska.

There's nothing wrong with wanderlust, Godwit! :)
