Subject: Hangin' out in the kitchen

Posted by: FatherSteve

Today, after decades of waiting, I was rewarded with one portion of Turkey in my Author's Kitchen pantry and quickly turned it into Turkey Pot Pie. There were/are 159 "recipes" provided, all of which are now completed, and there is a wee legend at the bottom of the list which says "There are at least another 11 dishes that can be created here, if you can work out what is needed."

The page that answers the question "Who has made the most dishes?" says I have made 173, which makes sense, because a number of those are ones for which no recipe was provided on the aforementioned list and which I simply made up.

This leaves me with 349 ingredients, most of which I don't know what do with. Is there some point at which further recipes will be revealed or am I just supposed to guess which 11 could be made of those 349 items or what?

Yeah, it's kinda not exactly fair that single question writers don't get more recipes. For a long time, I was only writing single questions and no quizzes, and I had hoarded huge quantities of ingredients. Now that quizzes are getting online (Sprint), recipes are trickling in...Ingredients are vanishing..

There's a list of almost all the recipes you can make. If you've got lots of ingredients, you can pick one and try mixing them together to see if you get anything. There are some recipes with the ingredients in the title like fish and chips. Or pick 4 things that you know taste good together and see if it's included in the game.

You could try researching any of the given recipe names on the internet and try to figure out basic ingredients

Are there scallions in the kitchen? I was wondering because one of my recipes uses leeks where I would expect scallions. I am also wondering about tofu. . .

I feel a bit like I do when I participate in October Unprocessed.

I've never seen scallions. A number of the recipes use slightly modified ingredients because of the limited number of ingredients being used to make an amazing range of dishes. I think that you will find soybeans called for to make a dish that would usually use tofu, for example. I just used rice to make something that I would actually cook using a puffed rice cereal.

Right, there are often substitutes for some ingredients. I've tried to make them at least somewhat plausible. Leeks instead of scallions (though not perfect) would be an adequate substitute in my mind, though maybe that is some kind of blasphemy in some kitchens. :)

If you check "Who's Made What" every day, over time you'll see new recipes - that aren't listed in "View All Available Recipes - have been won by various players over time.

You can try to figure out their ingredients - or any recipe ingredients - by researching same on the net - Wikipedia etc. Or guessing. Or applying logic. I'm a terrible, terrible cook and hate it with a passion, but even I know, for example, that cakes have basic ingredients. Extra specific ingredients are what makes the difference between them.

Also, if you keep writing quizzes or submitting single questions, you'll be given more ingredients. I found those seemingly hard to get ingredients are quite often given by submitting three single questions at a time - getting them accepted ie.

I think you're also given a new recipe every time a quiz is accepted, aren't you?

View All Available Recipes is a help with this challenge. Also your "View My Cook Book". All those links are resources. That and your brain - and being a member of Fun Trivia in the first place means that your neurotransmitters are firing beautifully :)

I have to admit (with regard to your comment, Trident) that I would be more likely to substitute chives for scallions (green onions) than leeks for green onions (as leeks don't taste like green onions -- even when young), but as long as I know that I'm not waiting for some scallions to show, I'm happy.

Along those same lines, is there a "ginger" in the game? I wrack my brain but don't recall.

There is! I had ginger for a long time, and yesterday I was able to use it to make a recipe.

It might be interesting to try and make some of these dishes in real life using the ingredients given for that dish.

Finally got a piece of tortilla.

It's tough knowing the recipes and not being able to cook them!

Alas, I need to write more quizzes to get more ingredients, but with spring coming and a new garden to start, it's hard. . .

Maybe I'll go plant some leeks! The chives are already up.

lol, celvet that's sweet. Instead of cooking with the ingredients, plant them!
