Subject: Shaping Up Crosswords

Posted by: kyleisalive

We're here to create a particular image for puzzles on the site. Crosswords can be technically puzzling and, here, our challenge is to get our creators to combine their talents at construction with the constraints of form.

In this challenge, we're looking for picture grids. By this, we mean that your created puzzles should take on a specific shape. The crosswords must follow the rules and guidelines for crossword creation, of course. Additionally, the shape you choose/make must be tied to the theme of your puzzle. A crossword shaped like a box would be about boxes, for instance. Below are some provided options, but we're also looking for some of your own. Creators may make create one puzzle at a time; if one goes online, you can create another, but only one at a time. First-come-first-serve!

Claimable Shapes:
House
A nation's borders
A star with any number of points - BigTriviaDawg
Castle - Leith90
An animal - Psnz
Heart - Psnz
Musical Note - Pollucci19
Baseball Diamond - Spanishliz
Soccer Ball - Spanishliz
Bird - Psnz

I have something of a romantic theme with a heart-shaped puzzle.

Here's a football/soccer ball (that rather looks like it's made from Lego bricks), and a similarly themed puzzle:

This challenge hasn't been forgotten. Currently working on another animal grid that's also doubly-crossed (American style). This one has 76 words in a medium puzzle. Most of my medium British-style puzzles have about 32 words.

The issue for me is the number of on-theme words... obviously it's much harder fitting theme words. I'm aiming for about 20% coverage here. I don't know if that's acceptable, but I'll submit it when I get things into a form that I feel happy about.

@agony, I hope you won't be disappointed.

Current version of the puzzle (I'm presently writing the clues) has just over 40% theme words.

"Mostly Water Birds" is now online:
link https://www.funtrivia.com/crossword/play.cfm?gid=9862

Despite being a fully-crossed (American-style) grid, the completed puzzle has 38/76 (50%) of the clues/answers on-theme. I surprised myself!

If my eyes don't deceive me, the bird is formed by the central black squares, yes? Interesting way of creating the shape; I like it!

@spanishliz: Yes.

In my mind, I've been calling it a duck. A fellow cruciverbalist I tested the puzzle on said, "look at the duckling!" without any prompting from me.
