Subject: Fully Crossed [3] - COMPLETE

Posted by: kyleisalive
Date: May 13 23

Looking to challenge yourself by writing some crosswords with...extra steps? Our goal here is to ensure a series of "American-style" crosswords-- crosswords in which every letter in the completed grid is part of two answers, one Across and one Down. There are no 'unchecked' letters. One of those can be found HERE for your reference.

When constructing such a puzzle, it is important to double and triple check to ensure that every word in the grid has a clue, as words will 'fill in' in one direction as you enter clues in the other.

To add to the challenge, a number, listed below, must sit in the middle of your grid, but no two creators can use the same number. You can use any size grid, and the number you choose can go in either direction. If your number has an even amount of letters, as long as it's crossing the middle square, you're good.

When your puzzle is online, post here and we'll add it to the list for completion. We're looking for thirteen!

Completed Numbers:
One - Leith90
Two - Sam388
Three - Leith90
Four - Spanishliz
Five - BigTriviaDawg
Six - Psnz
Seven - Psnz
Eight - BigTriviaDawg
Nine - Leith90
Ten - Sam388
Eleven - Sam388
Twelve - Sam388
Thirteen - Psnz

Using an even word across the middle square makes symmetry impossible (which is OK), but would it be allowed to use two words (e.g. FOURAND, as in "four and twenty blackbirds") to allow for a symmetrical grid?

I would say that adding a letter before or after the even-lettered word would be a clever solve here, to make sure there's consistency. I think either your route or that would be the solve.

These types of puzzles take a bit longer to write and probably edit. Can we claim a number ahead of time? It would be frustrating to get one almost complete or even turned in to find someone else who claims it before it goes online.

Here’s the SEVEN puzzle which reportedly caused the editor to suffer from cross eyes:

Could I please have SIX?

There were just so many words! :) Not to mention it was about the fourth puzzle I'd dealt with this morning.

For the words with an even number if letters, would it be acceptable to make them a plural?

Here’s SIX:

I note (in passing) that there’s something mathematical here.
THIRTEEN = SEVEN + SIX

It took a month to write, but I'm pretty proud of this one. Thanks Liz for an awesome job editing as always.

EIGHT is on the board!
