Japanese Chins can be traced back to a Chinese ancestry. It is believed that they were transported from China via Korea to Japan sometime between 700 and 1,000 CE. Many Japanese Chins were given as gifts to the Japanese nobility during this early history of the breed. Difficulty: Easy.

While the breed has existed for much longer, the American Kennel Club accepted the crested for full recognition in 1991. Difficulty: Hard.

The name is of French origin; the full modern translation of bichon frisé is "little white curly-haired dog". Difficulty: Hard.

 

It comes from the Spanish, bisóne, meaning "little dog", It is Italian, biccione, signifying "lap dog", It is of Portuguese origin, bise ona, "cute and curly"

Many people think they are Chinese, but they were first bred by Tibetan monks and sent to the Chinese emperors from time to time as gifts. Some sources say there was further breeding at the Chinese court between Shih Tzu and Pekingese to produce the modern dog. Difficulty: Hard.

Josephine Bonaparte owned a pug who went into battle with her husband, Napoleon. Some people believe that it was Napoleon's dog, while other can't believe that because of how he despised dogs. This pug is famous for carrying secret messages to Josephine from her husband. Difficulty: Hard.

Although there is some speculation that the breed may have originated elsewhere, the breed and its name are associated with Mexico.

Whatever the case, it was discovered by American tourists in the Mexican state of Chihuahua in the 19th century. These tourists brought some of the dogs back to the states with them, where the breed developed. Difficulty: Hard.

Pugs have an ancient history; in fact, the earliest reference to them was found in China in 600 BC. In about 950 AD, Emperor Kang Hsi commissioned a dictionary of all Chinese characters, and in it there are two references which could describe the Pug: "dogs with short legs" and "a dog with a short head." By the 14th century there were three main types of dogs in China that are identifiable as founders of breeds of today: the Pekingese, the Japanese Spaniel, and the Pug. Difficulty: Easy.

 

Russia, Egypt, Germany

Malshis are also known as Malti-tzu, Mal-Tzu or Shih-tese, Malshis are crosses between purebred Maltese and purebred Shih Tzu, and are known as F1 (first generation) hybrids, although they don't necessary have to inherit 50% Maltese and 50% Shih Tzu genes. One parent may have a greater influence over the other, hence the variation in looks and personalities. Difficulty: Easy.

Although the Japanese Chin ranges in size, dogs that weigh under 10 pounds are the most sought after. Difficulty: Hard.

The American Hairless Dog Club registered dogs on phenotype (appearance). If it had very little hair anywhere on its body, it was registered as a Xoloitzcuintli (Mexican hairless). If it had more hair on its head, feet and tail, it was registered as a Chinese crested. If you look at early pedigrees, you'll find some of the same individuals in both Xolo and crested pedigrees. Difficulty: Hard.

All of the preceding answers are plausible, as no one really knows where the dogs originated. Their history, however, has been indelibly linked to the sea: they often accompanied sailors on board ships and there is some evidence suggesting they were used as currency in bartering. This is called an "undershot" jaw. For most breeds such a jaw formation would be undesirable; a dog with jaw problems should not be bred. But for Shih Tzu and some other breeds, for example bulldogs, an undershot jaw is typical of the breed. Difficulty: Hard.

Fawn resembles a beige color. As fawn pugs become older, you may start to see more gray hairs. Difficulty: Hard.

They tend to act like a larger dog because when they walk, they straighten up their back, stick their head up, and strut around, acting like they're taller than they really are. In German, Affenpinscher means 'monkey-terrier'. Difficulty: Hard.

Malshis are a relatively new breed that originated in the 1990s. Most sources quote they originated in Australia although a few quote North America. However, their parents are among some of the oldest known breeds in the world. The Maltese originated some 2,800 years ago in the small island country of Malta, while the Shih Tzu originated in Tibet and has been officially documented for at least 1,000 years. Difficulty: Hard.

The AKC breed standard says that the hairless and powderpuff should be the same physically, with the exceptions of coat on the puff and dentition in the hairless. Difficulty: Hard.

No kidding! It literally means "Curly Lap Dog"! And of course the name itself is French. Difficulty: Hard.

The "chrysanthemum-faced dog" gets its name from the way its hair grows outwards from the centre of the face. Difficulty: Hard.

The Pug Dog Club was started by Mevr. Chr. Veldhuis. It started on August 30, 1957. If it wasn't for the Pug Dog Club, pugs wouldn't be very well-known in European countries. Difficulty: Hard.

Because of his small size, the Chihuahua doesn't need a lot of exercise. However, some people get the mistaken impression that you can carry small dogs everywhere without consequences. Chihuahuas are actually quite outgoing for their size, and should be walked daily to keep them fit. However, the exercise shouldn't be overdone either. Difficulty: Hard.

Pugs are classified as Toys, or small dogs. They are actually the largest of the Toys, weighing between 14 and 18 pounds. However, their pudgy little bodies have a tendency to get fat, so it's not uncommon to find one over 20 pounds. Difficulty: Average.

The Affenpinscher originated in Central Europe, probably around 1600. It was one of the several types of small terriers that moved from the barn where they caught rats, to the house, where they became beloved companions who also caught mice. Most Affenpinschers were found around the area of Munich, Germany, but many were also found around France. There his nickname is 'little devil with a mustache'. Difficulty: Hard.

Malshis were bred as companion dogs that could be tolerated by people with dog allergies because they are low shedding and hypoallergenic. They were also bred as an alternative to the longstanding "poodle mix", which are also hypoallergenic. Malshis are not recommended for very young kids due to their small size. Difficulty: Easy.

Black and white coated Japanese Chins are by far the most popular. The acceptable colors for Japanese Chins are: black and white, or red and white. No other colors are currently accepted by the AKC. "Lemons" are prized by many Chin owners because of their unique yellow coloring. Difficulty: Hard.

King Henry so loved the little dogs that he insisted they be bathed, perfumed and adorned with ribbons. He set the fashion whereby others in the aristocracy followed suit. This gave rise to the word "bichonner", meaning to pamper. Difficulty: Hard.

Shih Tzu are assertive little dogs. They are not the best choice for very small children as they may feel bothered by poking little fingers, but they generally get along fine with older children and other pets. They may bark at strangers but once introduced should accept them as friends. Just like any other dog, they need to learn good manners and be treated with consistency. Difficulty: Hard.

Many backyard breeders will give their Chihuahuas a cute name to mislead people into thinking they're different than the norm. There is no such thing as a teacup, pocket, miniature, or standard size of the breed. Chihuahuas come in two coat types -- short-haired and long-haired -- but these two are no different in size or temperament.

Some people purposely breed their Chihuahuas to be extremely small, weighing at a mature age under 4 pounds. Most experts DO NOT recommend owning a dog under 4 pounds because of the great health risks involved. Their bones are extremely fragile, their mouths are not large enough to develop healthy teeth, their internal organs are often weak and can fail suddenly. They also tend to have difficulty regulating their blood sugar. Difficulty: Hard.

Pugs are one of few breeds that were created with no purpose in mind, other than being lap dogs (which they're very good at). They are very loving and friendly, and make surprisingly good watchdogs, as they have a deceivingly deep bark. Difficulty: Average.

Affenpinschers are small dogs, but if it is threatened by another dog, Affenpinschers can be fierce. Difficulty: Hard.

 

4 to 8 and one third inches, 12 to 14 and one half inches, 15 to 20 inches

As a toy, the chin is both expected to be small and bred to be small. They are a perfect lap dogs so their weight needs to be low to fit that description. Difficulty: Hard.

 

10-20 pounds, 20-30 pounds, 30-40 pounds

Frisé means curly, thus the ideal is tightly curled hair that responds to brushing by becoming fluffy and powder puff like. It also feels velvety when stroked. Difficulty: Hard.

 

Wavy, Wiry, Long, flowing and silky to the touch

The Chihuahua must be alert and quick on foot to avoid being stepped on. Very lively. Chihuahuas are incredibly proud, and are likely to be dog aggressive. Courageous and bold, they'll quickly challenge a much larger dog (or even you!) for dominance. This spunky little dog must be constantly supervised to make sure he isn't getting himself into trouble. Strong-willed, they tend to be hard to train, particularly with housebreaking. Much patience is needed, as they don't take well to a harsh manner of training. Chihuahuas are intensely loyal, giving and demanding affection from their owner. They're likely to bond closely to one person and be reserved or suspicious with everyone else. Chihuahuas truly have a big personality! Difficulty: Hard.

Hogarth's most famous painting of a pug was "House of Cards," painted in 1730 and featuring one of his black pugs. Difficulty: Hard.

Other causes of tear stains include ingrown eye lashes and shallow eye sockets. It can also be caused by allergies and poor food diet. However the actual culprit is the chemical porphyrin, excreted through tears in dogs. The tears spill over onto their faces which will stain light-coloured fur pink, red or brown.

Although staining causes dogs no discomfort, it is unsightly cosmetically and therefore requires daily management. Difficulty: Easy.

While black and white cresteds are very popular today, the standard permits any color or combination of colors. There are SO many beautiful colors in the breed!
From blue to palomino, with spots or without, they're all lovely and they're all acceptable. Difficulty: Hard.

The bichon makes a great companion. Due to their sensitive nature, it is recommended they be disciplined gently. There have been some reports of bichons being traumatized by a handler/owner speaking loudly to them. Difficulty: Hard.

 

Fiercely loyal, protective, and brave, Energetic, curious, intelligent and likes a job to do, Friendly, easy-going, and good with children

The "(Usually White)/black/red/or brown fluff, elegant-appearing, squarely built, air of distinction and dignity" is a Poodle.

The "White long silky hair, dark eyes, slightly rounded skull" is a Maltese.

And, the "Blue/black long hair, black nose, sharp intelligent expression" is a Yorkshire Terrier. Difficulty: Hard.

They have been called this in France since the early 1800s. Carlin was the name of a man who played a role in a play as a man with a black mask. Difficulty: Hard.

While crested owners will tell you that their dogs are intelligent, goofy, entertaining, stubborn and many other things, the breed standard calls for lively and gay. Shyness is not typical of the crested and should not be rewarded in the show ring. Difficulty: Hard.
