Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A large marine mammal with a member of the cruciferous family. A ____ eating ____.

Answer: whale kale

Based on his color, this friendly guy is a blue whale. He is the largest animal to ever live, yet he survives almost exclusively on tiny, shrimp-like crustaceans called krill. In this image, he's not eating that, but he is chomping on some kale which is a nutrient-dense, leafy green vegetable from the cabbage family that is widely celebrated as a "superfood" because it is packed with vitamins A, C, and K. Unfortunately for the whale here, kale does not grow on the ocean floor.
2. A serpent with a frosted, layered dessert. A ____ eating ____.

Answer: snake cake

This guy, based on his coloring, could be a rough green snake native to North America. While he appears to be enjoying the chocolate cake in this picture, he would actually eat a variety of insects such as crickets, grasshoppers, caterpillars, and spiders. It appears he has 3 candles on his cake, which actually makes him middle aged as his species, in the wild, lives about 7 years.
3. A large cousin of a rabbit with a bell-shaped fruit. A ____ eating a ____.

Answer: hare pear

This guy may look like a rabbit, but he's actually a hare. That makes him larger than a rabbit, with very long ears and powerful hind legs. He's a herbivore and, due to the rugged terrain in which he normally lives, he eats hard vegetation like bark, twigs, and tough grasses. If a hare, like this one, happend to stumble upon a pear, he would definitely partake of it and have a special, unexpected treat!
4. A bearded barnyard mammal with a soda and ice cream treat. A ____ eating a ____.

Answer: goat float

A goat, like this guy here, typically lives more on a farm than in a soda fountain shop. He is one of the oldest domesticated species in human history and is known for his incredible agility. Whereas it is a myth that he enjoys eating tin cans, he does like a variety of plants and grains.

He would probably try the delicious ice cream and cola float, but since a goat's metabolism causes him to bloat easily, the carbonization would not do him any favors.
5. The largest member of the deer family with the output of squeezed fruit. A ____ drinking ____.

Answer: moose juice

This guy is shown in the woods, which is exactly where he would be found. He is also solitary and, being a male, has a large set of antlers. In the summer, he would primarily eat aquatic plants that grow underwater. Because he's wearing long sleeves, we can assume it's cooler so he would be eating woody branches.

He normally would drink only water, but he would definitely try the juice if he ever found some because he seeks out sugars in fruits and certain plants.
6. A group of small rodents with starchy cereal grain. Some ____ eating ____.

Answer: mice rice

Mice, like these pictured, are rodents with pointed snouts, large ears, and long, thin tails. This group is enjoying time in the daylight but most of the time mice are nocturnal. Their teeth are shown in their smiles because mice have incisors that never stop growing. They must constantly gnaw on hard materials to keep their teeth at a manageable length. This group is also happy because they are eating rice. One of the most important food crops in the world, rice and other grain types are also the primary component of a mouse's natural diet.
7. A large swine with a cup full of a pirate's rum drink. A ____ drinking some ____.

Answer: hog grog

A hog, like this guy pictured here, is an older, larger swine that has reached its full market weight (typically over 120-150 pounds or 54-68 kg). He would normally be found in a hog barn rather than in a pirate's tavern. He would love the food aspect of the restaurant, though, as he is an omnivore and will eat almost anything.

He and his peers are sensitive to dehydration, so he drinks a lot of water. He would need to steer clear of grog, though, as this old concoction is made of water, lime, and rum. Alcohol can be toxic to our hog friend.
8. A grizzly with a French cream-filled pastry. A ____ eating an ____.

Answer: bear eclair

Although this grizzly bear in the picture looks cute and cuddly, he is actually massive and can be extremely dangerous in a threatening situation. He does, however, truly love to "hang out" in a meadow for its succulent grasses and wildflowers like clover and dandelion.

He will also flip over rocks for ants or dig up ground squirrels. Grizzlies enjoy bee larvae so the tree in the back would interest him for that reason. He also has an extreme sweet-tooth and would pounce on the high-calorie, sugary French eclair to pack on weight for hibernation.
9. A clever vulpine mammal with some salt-cured salmon. A ____ eating some ____.

Answer: fox lox

A fox, like the guy pictured here, is a clever, medium-sized member of the dog family characterized by its slender build, bushy tail, and pointed ears. He and his peers live in one of the widest geographical range of any carnivore in the world. While he would not be sitting at a restaurant, he would eat almost anything on the menu since his diet consists of small prey, plants, and even scavenged food from cities and towns.

The salty, fatty scent of lox would definitely get his attention, although he probably would not put it on a bagel!
10. A winged household pest with a latticed-top dessert. A ____ eating a ____.

Answer: fly pie

A housefly, like the guy pictured here, is one of the most common and widely distributed insects in the world, found in almost every environment inhabited by humans. His big eyes that you see in the drawing are made of thousands of individual lenses, giving him a nearly 360-degree field of view.

While he is sticking a piece of cherry pie in his mouth in the picture, in actuality he would have to first regurgitate a digestive enzyme onto the food to "melt" it into a liquid soup, which he then would slurp up.

Not quite as cute as the picture.
