(a) Drag-and-drop from the right to the left, or (b) click on a right side answer, and then click on its destination box to move it.
You are provided with ten clues that, when ordered, form a word ladder. Each clue is associated with an answer that is made up of between one and ten letters. The answer to the clue at the top rung of the ladder (position 1) consists of ten letters, the second rung consists of nine letters and so on. As you descend the ladder, the typical "drop-a-letter" rules apply whereby a letter is dropped and the remaining letters form the next answer, often in anagram form. As the answers to the clues aren't visible, it may be worth using a notepad.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Reversion to previous state

Regression has many different meanings including a number of obsolete definitions. The online edition of the 'Oxford English Dictionary' provides citations for an initial usage of the word that dates back to the 1500s, where it was used to mean "repetition" or to "return to a subject mentioned or discussed earlier".

Regression is a term used to mean widely different things in various fields and disciplines of science and mathematics but - in biology and medicine - the word still retains a link to its 16th century origins: "The action, fact, or process of returning to a former state or condition".

Starting word: REGRESSION
2. Action of leaving

Dropping the letter R from the beginning of regression leaves us with a similar sounding word with a very different meaning. Egression, as defined by the 'Oxford English Dictionary', is "the action of going out or leaving from a place". Egression and egress are interchangeable nouns and the latter is the more commonly heard of the two. Egress can also be used as a verb.

REGRESSION - R = EGRESSION
3. Granitic rocks

In mineralogy, greisens (plural of the countable noun, greisen) are granitic rocks that are composed - in the main - of quartz and mica. They are referred to as granitic as they are an altered form of granite; the process through which this alteration occurs is known as greisening.

Greisen was listed in the 1879 work 'The Study of Rocks', penned by English geologist, Frank Rutley.

Anagram (EGRESSION - O ) = GREISENS
4. Biblical book

Genesis is the first book of the Old Testament and its many pages contain some of the most well-known biblical content including accounts of Creation, Noah's Ark and the Tower of Babel. Along with Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy, Genesis is one of the five books that form the Pentateuch.

Anagram ( GREISENS - R ) = GENESIS
5. Japanese master?

The entry for sensei in the online edition of the 'Oxford English Dictionary' is "In Japan or with reference to Japanese culture: (a respectful title or form of address for) a teacher, master, or skilled artist. Also in extended use: a guide or mentor".

The definition shows that sensei is not only a way of respectfully addressing a teacher, master or mentor but is also a synonymous term for the respected figure themself.

Anagram ( GENESIS - G ) = SENSEI
6. European river

The Seine is a river - nearly 500 miles in length - that flows from Source-Seine to the English Channel at the port city of Le Havre, via the French capital, Paris. The river was somewhat controversially used during the 2024 Summer Olympics; triathletes and marathon swimmers were asked to swim in the Seine, something that had been banned since the 1920s.

Anagram ( SENSEI - S ) = SEINE
7. Trigonometric function

Trigonometry is a broad field of mathematics and at its heart is the triangle; the discipline features a long list of equations that express the relationship between the sides and angles of triangles and such expressions often make use of the functions sine, cosine and tangent.

SEINE - E = SINE
8. Yen / 100

The sen is an obsolete Japanese currency that was a subunit of the yen until its discontinuation in 1953. The sen was equivalent to one one-hundredth of a yen but this became a largely worthless denomination in light of the inflation that impacted the currency in the early to middle 20th century.

Anagram ( SINE - I ) = SEN
9. 'In' French?

'En' is a short but versatile word in French and one of its uses is as the equivalent to the English language preposition, 'in'. 'En' can also be used as a pronoun, in much the same way as 'it' would be used to replace a noun in English.

SEN - S = EN
10. Elemental Nitrogen

Nitrogen, represented by the chemical symbol N, has an atomic number of seven which indicates that the element has seven protons in its nucleus. Nitrogen is a gas at standard temperature and pressure (STP) and exists in the atmosphere in its diatomic form, N2.

EN - E = N
