Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Catherine Bach (Daisy)
Answer: Jessica Simpson
As the only female character appearing in both the series and the film, Daisy Duke was the 'gimme' match-up for this quiz. Catherine Bach famously played the role of cousin Daisy to the main characters of the show (Bo & Luke), and popularized VERY short cut-off jean shorts in her outfit, that became known as 'Daisy Dukes' after her character.
Jessica Simpson took on the role for the 2005 film, altering the look of the character from Bach's dark hair with her signature blonde hair.
2. James Best (Roscoe)
Answer: M.C. Gainey
Sheriff Roscoe P. Coltrane was my favourite bumbling sheriff, portrayed amusingly by James Best (1926-2015), who had already established himself as a prolific actor, appearing mostly in Westerns, and guesting on many television shows.
Taking over the role for the 2005 film was M.C. Gainey, who began his acting career in the early 1980s. This included many television appearances, including one episode in Season 4 of "The Dukes of Hazzard" in 1982.
3. Sorrell Booke (Boss Hogg)
Answer: Burt Reynolds
The sneering and entitled Jefferson Davis "Boss" Hogg, was portrayed by Sorrell Booke (1930-1994). While he acted in many plays and television shows, his movie appearances were minimal in comparison. At a diminutive height of 5 foot 6 inches, it was a bit jarring to see who took on the role in the 2005 film.
Burt Reynolds (1936-2018) was made famous during the 1970s and '80s, hitting it big in such films as "Deliverance" (1972), "The Longest Yard" (1974), and "Smokey and the Bandit" (1977). And while perhaps not exceedingly tall, at 5 foot 11 inches, Reynolds' portrayal of "Boss" Hogg took a little adjustment for anyone familiar with the original series.
4. Rick Hurst (Cletus)
Answer: Jack Polick
Deputy Cletus Hogg, portrayed by Rick Hurst (b. 1946) in the series, was Boss Hogg's second cousin, once removed... and as he often said, just 1/8 of Hogg blood running in his veins.
Both Hurst and Jack Polick, who took on the role in the 2005 film, managed to play the character as somewhat slow and dimwitted, if also good-hearted.
5. Waylon Jennings (The Balladeer)
Answer: Junior Brown
The Balladeer was the voice that narrated what was going on at various points during the show. Country singing legend Waylon Jennings (1937-2002) provided the voice for the series, and also wrote and performed the theme song, after which this quiz is named.
Also a Country singer/songwriter, Jamieson "Junior" Brown took over the role for the 2005 film. In addition to providing the narration, Brown was also responsible for much of the movie's soundtrack.
6. Ben Jones (Cooter)
Answer: David Koechner
Cooter Davenport, the owner of the Hazzard County Garage and Hazzard Junk Yard (and friend to the Dukes) was portrayed by Ben Jones (b. 1941), who was actually part of the film "The Moonrunners" (1975) that the show was based on. Jones would move on from acting for a time to enter politics, becoming a Democratic Congressman for the state of Georgia in 1988. After retiring, Jones returned to acting, and also opened a "Dukes of Hazzard" museum and theme store, appropriately named Cooter's.
David Koechner, known for his comedic roles in "The Office" (US version) and "The Anchorman" film series, managed to portray Cooter with a similar humourous bent.
7. Denver Pyle (Uncle Jesse)
Answer: Willie Nelson
Denver Pyle (1920-1997) portrayed Uncle Jesse Duke in the original "Dukes of Hazzard" series, and was previously known for playing law enforcement roles in "The Andy Griffith Show" (1960-68) and in the film "Bonnie and Clyde" (1967), amongst other things. Uncle Jesse had no children of his own, but filled in the role of the family patriarch, often doling out good advice to his niece and nephews.
Taking on the role of the wisest member of the Duke family for the 2005 film was Country & Western superstar Willie Nelson. He went on to reprise the role in the 2007 prequel film "Dukes of Hazzard: The Beginning".
8. John Schneider (Bo)
Answer: Seann William Scott
Beauregard "Bo" Duke was portrayed by John Schneider during "The Dukes of Hazzard" series, even though you might also know him as Superman's dad (Jonathan Kent) from the 2001-11 series "Smallville". As Bo Duke, Schneider was the younger and more impulsive of the two Duke cousins, and as a NASCAR driving hopeful, was usually the one behind the wheel of the General Lee.
Seann William Scott's penchant for playing sarcastic comedic roles fit well with the impulsive nature of Bo Duke in the 2005 film, and playing off the slightly more straight-laced older cousin Luke (as portrayed by Johnny Knoxville) worked quite well on screen.
9. Sonny Shroyer (Enos)
Answer: Michael Weston
Deputy Enos Strate was portrayed by Sonny Shroyer (b. 1935), who effectively acted as the polite, shy, bumbling deputy sheriff with a crush on Daisy Duke. Perhaps the only truly honest law-enforcement officer in Hazzard County, Enos was often the butt of the Sheriff's displeasure and just as often manipulated by the Dukes in their schemes.
Michael Weston had only been acting for a few years before landing the role of Deputy Enos Strate in the 2005 film, and has primarily done minor films and guest appearances or short stints on various television series, the most prominent being "Law & Order: SVU" and "House."
10. Tom Wopat (Luke)
Answer: Johnny Knoxville
As the older, more responsible cousin, Lucas "Luke" Duke was solidly portrayed by Tom Wopat (b. 1951), who was (in real life), nine years older than his counterpart, John Schneider. While Wopat continued to act in minor roles following his fame during "The Dukes of Hazzard," he also forged a successful singing career, producing more than a dozen albums since.
Johnny Knoxville, who took on the role in the 2005 film, is also older than his counterpart Seann William Scott, but only by six years. Even so, he portrayed Luke as being the more reasonable of the two cousins, often trying to rein in the more impulsive Bo, while still going along for the crazy ride.
