Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

The exact origins of 'Old Mother Hubbard' are disputed. It is thought that Sarah Catherine Martin's version may have been adapted from existing folklore. It was first published by J. Harris in London on June 1, 1805, as an illustrated comical story that became very popular.

The rhyme is associated with Devon, where she was said to have written it while staying at Kitley House, the residence of her sister and her politician brother-in-law, John Pollexfen Bastard.

Her version is notable for its episodic structure, with each verse presenting a new antic by the dog. This format allowed for creative expansion and inspired many later adaptations and continuations.

The verses I omitted from the full version, which come after Old Mother Hubbard returning from the hatter's are as follows:

She went to the barber's
To buy him a wig
When she came back
He was dancing a jig.

She went to the cobbler's
To buy him some shoes;
When she came back
He was reading the news.

She went to the sempstress
To buy him some linen;
When she came back
The dog was spinning.

She went to the hosier's
To buy him some hose;
When she came back
He was dressed in his clothes.

Then it finishes with the dog saying 'bow-wow'.
