Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:
For an album to be certified Diamond by the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America), record sales needed to exceed ten million copies. "Beauty And The Beast" surpassed two million copies sold after its release in 1991. But "The Lion King" shattered that total by five times. By 2021, "The Lion King" soundtrack released in 1994 had surpassed fifteen million albums sold. In later years, the "Frozen" soundtrack released in 2013 became the second Disney soundtrack certified Diamond.
The success of the 1994 soundtrack was due to two main reasons. One was the fact that the movie was a monster hit at the box office. "The Lion King" was the highest grossing film of 1994 in the United States and Canada exceeding $750 million dollars. This made the movie the highest grossing animated film of all-time and was ranked just behind "Jurassic Park" as the highest grossing movie of all-time as of 1994. Viewers of the film were humming the songs on the way of the theater and wanted to relive the moments by buying the album.
The second biggest reason for the success was the inclusion of Elton John on the soundtrack. The Rock And Roll Hall of Fame rocker not only wrote songs for the film, he released "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" and "Circle Of Life" as pop singles. "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" won the Academy Award for Best Original Song and the Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. "Circle Of Life" reached number two on the US Billboard Adult Contemporary Chart. Elton also recorded "I Just Can't Wait To Be King" for the soundtrack.
The rest of the soundtrack included beautifully orchestrated songs by German producer Hans Zimmer. The instrumentals included "This Land", "To Die For", "Under The Stars", and "King of Pride Rock". The other soundtrack song featured the vocal talents of Broadway star Nathan Lane ("Hakuna Matata) and Oscar winner Jeremy Irons, comedians Whoopi Goldberg, Cheech Marin, and Jim Cummings on "Be Prepared".
The wrong answers included "Spirit", "Never Too Late", "The Lion Sleeps Tonight", and "He Lives In You" on the 2019 live-action remake. The 2024 "Mufasa" movie featured "I Always Wanted A Brother". "Rhythm of the Pride Lands" contained "Warthog Rhapsody" and "Shadowland" is from the Broadway musical of "The Lion King".
