Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Mechanic

A mechanic is someone who fixes engines when they stop working properly. They figure out why it has stopped working and then they either fix it or put new parts in if they have broken.

The tool in the picture is called a spanner or a wrench depending on where you live. The open ends grip onto nuts and bolts and makes them turn to either loosen or tighten them.
2. Judge

A judge is the person in charge of a courtroom. They are like a referee who makes sure everything is done by the rules. They listen to both sides of a story and look at the evidence and then decide who is right or wrong and decide if someone needs to be punished for something.

The tool in the picture is called a gavel. It is used like a hammer on a small piece of wood called a block. The judge will use it when they want people to pay attention to them or when the case is over.
3. Policeman

A policeman's job is to make sure that people don't break the law and to catch them if they do. They keep watch and make sure that we are safe. If we are in trouble or scared of something we can always call them to help us.

The picture shows some handcuffs. These are metal rings that go around people's wrists and get locked so people's hands are kept together. Police put these on people when they get arrested to stop them from escaping or trying to hurt themselves or other people.
4. Plumber

Plumbers take care of pipes and drains. They fix pipes when they are leaking and they unblock them when sinks, showers, baths or toilets stop draining.

When pipes are clogged they use the tool in the picture called a plunger. When you push down on it the rubber gets squashed down and creates a strong suction that will hopefully move the blockage.
5. Chef

Chefs are like fancy cooks. They are trained to cook things perfectly and they create their own recipes, too. They also plan the menus for the restaurant. Some chefs just do one kind of cooking, like a pastry chef who makes the yummy desserts.

The picture shows a pot and a frying pan. Some people think pots and pans are the same thing but they aren't. Pots are deep and round with handles and lids where pans are flat and shallow with a one long handle.
6. Janitor

Janitors work behind the scenes in schools, buildings and officers. You don't often see them but they are the ones that keep everything nice and tidy. They do a lot of cleaning and making sure all the rubbish bins are emptied.

Janitors use lots of things that you see used at home like the mop and bucket, vacuum cleaners, brushes, dustpans and lots of cleaning detergents.
7. Referee

Referees and umpires are like the judges at sports events. They watch to make sure players are following all the rules of the game. They are a bit different though. Umpires are usually found in games like baseball and referees in basketball and football games. They have more responsibility than umpires and often have other people helping them out, like a person who just watches the lines to make sure no-one goes out of bounds.

They all use whistles to get attention because it is very noisy at games and they need the players to have a sound they can hear and recognise.
8. Carpenter

A carpenter is a builder who works with wood. Some of them work on building frames and floors for houses and others choose to make things like beautiful furniture.

Carpenters use lots of tools to cut, smooth, shape and join wood together. The picture is of a hammer that is mainly used for hitting nails into pieces of wood to join them together. It has two ends and if you put a nail in wrong the other end can pull it back out for you.
9. Doctor

A doctor is someone who takes care of us when we get sick. They are trained to know what the body is supposed to do, what is happening when it isn't working properly and how to fix it so we feel better. Sometimes we see them when we are not sick to have things called vaccinations, which are needles to stop us from getting sick.

The picture is of a stethoscope. The doctor puts the earpieces in both their ears and the other end on your skin and they can hear what is happening inside your body!
10. Fireman

Firemen have a few jobs. The first is to put out fires with water or special foams. They also help rescue people when they are in a dangerous situation or stuck in a car after a crash. It's also their job to teach people and businesses how to prevent fires from starting in the first place.

The picture shows a fire extinguisher. It can be carried and used to put out small fires before they get bigger but never try to do it on your own!
