6. Mount Pinatubo's catastrophic eruption of June 1991 was the 20th century's second-largest terrestrial volcanic eruption. The largest, which resulted in the formation of the volcano Novarupta, occurred in 1912 in which chilly US state?

Answer: Alaska

Many people will remember the disruptions in global weather patterns caused by the huge amounts of ash and other materials dispersed in the stratosphere by the explosive eruption of Mount Pinatubo, an hitherto low-profile volcano on the Philippine island of Luzon. Pinatubo's eruption, however, did not quite reach the magnitude of the 60-hour-long eruption that occurred on June 6, 1912 in what is now Katmai National Park and Preserve, located on the Alaska (or Aleutian) Peninsula in southern Alaska.

The eruption that formed Novarupta ("newly erupted") was rated 6 (Colossal) on the Volcanic Explosivity Index - on a par not only with Pinatubo's, but with Krakatoa's devastating 1883 eruption. Just to put things into perspective, the Novarupta eruption released 30 times the volume of magma of the 1980 eruption of Mount St Helens, in the US state of Washington. Oregon, California and Hawaii are also home to a remarkable number of active volcanoes and related phenomena, but Alaska (also on account of its sheer size) tops them all. All of these US states are part of the Pacific Ring of Fire.
