Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

Balvenie is a distillery in Dufftown, and was the first to introduce "finishing", meaning that whisky is matured in traditional casks and then transferred to different types of casks (for instance rum, sherry or port) for a few years to develop a more complex flavour.

Macallan is a quite famous brand, so much that the Bank of Scotland use an image of their stills on their £10 note! It is also the only distillery employing its own Master Cooper to oversee the casks used in production.

Lagavulin, from Gaelic "Hollow of the Mill", is located on Islay. The distillery was formally founded in 1816, after illegal distillation had taken place at the exact same site for almost a hundred years.

Bruichladdich, affectionately known as "Laddie", takes pride in using as much original equipment and traditional methods as possible. No computers are used in the production, everything is measured by hand and pure skill.

Aberfeldy is located right in the centre of Scotland, geographically speaking. Their single malt was originally intended as the base for Dewar's blends (which it still is), but the whisky is quite successful as a single malt as well.

Talisker is located on the Isle of Skye, and is noted for its unique wash stills, that ensure a double distillation.

Lindores Abbey is a relative newcomer, established in 2017. Its owners are also caretakers of the medieval abbey located right next to it, and archeological evidence show that the monks used to distill whisky on the premises, at least as far back as 1494.

Glenlivet is famous for being the first distillery to obtain a formal license in Scotland, in 1824. For several years after, its owner, George Smith, had to carry pistols to protect himself from angry "moonshiners" in the region, who felt he betrayed them by going legit!

Old Pulteney is one of the most Northern distilleries on the mainland, and is known for a salty flavour. When the distillery was built, the main wash still was too tall for the building and had to be hastily reconstructed, resulting in the only still in Scotland without a swan neck.

Springbank, located in Campbeltown, is the only distillery in Scotland to perform every part of the process on its premises, even malting all its own barley.

Glenfiddich was the very first single malt to be marketed outside of Scotland. The name means "Valley of the Deer" in Scottish.

Jura is the only distillery on the isle of Jura. With only 200 residents, it goes without saying that the distillery is quite important to their economy!

Ballantine's is a well-known blended whisky, very popular around the world.

Dewar's is a blended whisky, one of the first to age the blends in casks after blending.

Paddy is Irish, and a blend as well.

Johnnie Walker are blended whiskies, and also one of the best-selling brands in the world.

Haig is a blended whisky, but the name comes from a family who ran a Lowland distillery in the 1700s.

Bagpiper is a blend, and an Indian brand.
