Lord of the Rings Monopoly Trivia Quiz

Original 2003 Edition

The slogan for the original game of "Monopoly" is "Own it all," and that sentiment takes on new meaning with "The Lord of the Rings Trilogy" edition, where it takes "One Ring to Rule Them All!" How well do you remember this 2003 release?

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Six characters can be chosen as gamepieces, but only one Hobbit. Which one?

Answer: Frodo

Frodo is the only hobbit featured in the game, but it is possible to choose Aragorn, Gimli, Legolas, Gandalf, or Galadriel, making the traditional six tokens for a "Monopoly" game. In the 2021 "The Lord of the Rings" edition, there are nine tokens (the entire Fellowship of the Ring).
2. Another token can be used to help shorten the game. What must be carried to Mount Doom?

Answer: The One Ring

At the beginning of the game, the One Ring token is placed on the first property, and every time someone completes their turn, it moves to the next property. If the player lands on the property with the One Ring on their turn, they can receive it for free, if unowned. However, if someone already owns that property, they must pay double the rent in Power.

With this version of the game, play ends once the One Ring reaches Mount Doom.
3. Instead of dollars, what is the medium used to purchase properties and pay taxes?

Answer: Power

Using 'power' as the means of property transactions is simply an attempt to get into the theme of "The Lord of the Rings." There is no actual change to the dollar amounts in the game, excepting that it is now referred to as 'power.' You begin the game with 1,500 Power.

For instance, you still earn 200 Power when you pass go, and each property value is what you expect (the first, least expensive property costs 60 Power, and the last, most expensive property costs 400 Power).

A related change are the Houses and Hotels, in this case changed to Strongholds and Fortresses.
4. Included with the game is one special die, with the symbol of an eye replacing the single pip of the '1' side. Whose eye?

Answer: Sauron

Of course, just as there is only "One Ring," there is only one "Eye of Sauron," so it doesn't appear as the '1' on BOTH dice, just on one of them.
5. The regular 'Community Chest' and 'Chance' stacks have what names in the game?

Answer: Events and People

The cards are still like the original versions except "LOTR"-themed.

An example of an Event (Community Chest) card is: Caught stealing vegetables from Farmer Maggot. Lose 50 power.
An example of a People (Chance) card is: Sauron summons you. Advance token to Mount Doom.

And there are still 'Go to Jail' (You are captured by Saruman) and 'Get Out of Jail Free' cards (Gwahir rescues you from the Tower of Orthanc) - examples from the Event deck.
6. The least expensive property, where the journey begins, has what name?

Answer: Bag End

The properties follow the same colour scheme as the original game, with the same power (dollar) amounts for each property. AND the properties presented follow the journey of the characters. The two cheapest (dark purple) properties (originally Mediterranean and Baltic Avenues) are represented with Bag End (Bilbo's home), and Farmer Maggot's.
7. In place of railroads, what kind of 'properties' include Asfaloth and Shadowfax?

Answer: Steeds

The different 'Steeds,' in addition to the already named Asfaloth and Shadowfax, are Bill the Pony and Brego. Of course, 'Horses' would have been an inaccurate term, as Bill is only a pony.
8. Where one normally expects to be hit with a 'Luxury Tax,' in this edition of the game you find yourself in whose lair, encountered by Sam and Frodo in the story?

Answer: Shelob's

As with the Luxury Tax, there is a cost when you land on this property. Shelob's Lair takes a hit of 75 power from you, which is better than losing your life, I suppose.

The other 'special' spaces on the board that we haven't seen are Income Tax, changed to Seen by the Palantír, and the Utilities, changed to Gandalf's Staff and Saruman's Staff, respectively.
9. The corner squares (Go, Jail, Free Parking, and Go To Jail) are the same as in regular "Monopoly."

Answer: True

There are still some things they don't change... And they didn't even change the imagery to be "LOTR"-themed. The 'Free Parking' still shows a car, and the 'Go to Jail' still shows a policeman. The only minimal difference that can be found is that you collect 200 power instead of $200 when passing 'Go.'
10. What is the most expensive property, and ultimate destination of the Fellowship, on the board?

Answer: Mount Doom

As with the original "Monopoly," the two most expensive properties, right before you reach 'Go,' are the dark blue properties. In this case, instead of Park Place ($350) and Boardwalk ($400), the "LOTR Trilogy" edition gives you Barad-dûr (350 power) and Mount Doom (400 power).

All of the other properties follow the same colour scheme as the original game, with the same costs associated with each, visiting different locations along the journey from Bag End to, ultimately, Mount Doom.
