Poker, Cribbage, or Both Trivia Quiz

Two of my favorite card games are poker and cribbage. One has the excitement of gambling and bluffing, the other is very strategic. Simply sort the attributes of the two games into only poker, only cribbage, or shared by both games.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Uses a 52 card deck

Answer: Both games

Both card games use a standard 52 card deck. Variations of poker and cribbage could include added jokers but this is not the typical base game. Pinochle is a card game that uses 48 cards. Euchre only uses 24 cards.
2. Three of a kind is a good thing

Answer: Both games

A three of a kind is having three cards that match such as three aces. In poker, a three of a kind is a hand that beats two pairs, one pair, or simply the higher card. In cribbage, three of a kind is worth six points or the equivalent of three pairs.
3. You can get skunked

Answer: Cribbage

In poker, you either win the hand or lose. In cribbage you play to 121 points. If you reach 121 points and your opponent scores less than 91, they were skunked. Even worse, if they score less than 61 points, they're double skunked.
4. A shared cut card is used by all players

Answer: Both games

In cribbage your hand is made up of the four cards in your hand and shared cut card that each player uses for their hand. In poker, some variations use a common card for all players. This would include Texas Hold-Em or Omaha. But many games including the most popular, Five Card Stud, are simply using the five cards in your hand and no shared cards.
5. The best hand is worth 29 points

Answer: Cribbage

Cribbage is a counting game with a goal of 121 points. Poker is not scored on a points basis. To get a perfect score of 29, you would need to be dealt all three 5s and a Jack card. Then the cut card would have to be the fourth 5 card and the same suit as the Jack in your hand.
6. Kings beat queens

Answer: Poker

In poker, the cards are ranked with an ace being the highest card and the 2 card being the lowest value. So, yes a king is a stronger card than a queen and would beat an equivalent hand with a queen as high card. In cribbage, having a pair of kings or queens are inconsequential, they're of equal value.
7. A straight of five cards is a good thing

Answer: Both games

A straight in either game is a run of cards. In cribbage, you earn four points for a straight containing four consecutive cards (like 7, 8, 9, 10) or five points for a straight of 5 cards (2, 3, 4, 5, 6). In poker, a straight beats hands like a three-of-a-kind, two pair, one pair, and high-card hands.
8. The cards adding up to 15 is a good thing

Answer: Cribbage

When pegging before counting your hand, you earn two points in cribbage if you add a card to make the total equal 15 or 31. In poker, there is no advantage to having your cards add up to a certain number. The game is won or lost based on who has the best hand or if someone folds before showing their cards.
9. Opponent may fold during a round of play

Answer: Poker

Cribbage is essentially a race to reach the end of the cribbage board and accumulate 121 points. You may have a bad hand and score low points but you still play every hand. Poker is also played in separate hands. But if you deduce that your hand will likely not beat your opponents, a player may concede that hand and fold their cards.
10. Four aces are better than four jacks

Answer: Poker

In cribbage, four of a kind of any card type (2,3,...jack, queen, king, ace) are all worth the same twelve points. This is the equivalent of 6 pairs of two points each. In poker, four aces would beat four jacks.
