Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name for a place where a carnival might happen?

Answer: Fairground

A fairground is usually a large outdoor area where a midway and concession stands are set up for an annual fair. These events are also often associated with agricultural competitions where livestock and crops are judged on a number of things such as size, adherence to certain standards, colour, etc.

The fairground may have indoor buildings or barns for these events. Sometimes, locals can enter competitions in food and crafts, such as "Best Berry Jam", or "Finest Wood Carving".
2. Which ten-letter "F-word" did Tolkien use in a volume that was originally published in 1954?

Answer: Fellowship

"The Fellowship of the Ring" was the first of three volumes that make up the novel "The Lord of the Rings". Tolkien published "The Fellowship of the Ring" in July, 1954, shortly before publishing the other two volumes in the set that make up "The Lord of the Rings".

The book is a continuation of "The Hobbit" with the plot picking up from the end of that original book that had been published in 1937. In "The Fellowship of the Ring", a hobbit named Frodo and his companions start out on a trek to try to destroy a malevolent Ring of Power.

The other two volumes in "The Lord of the Rings" continue to detail Frodo's journey with his companions and their attempts to destroy the Ring.
3. What heat-giving structures can be found in many homes?

Answer: Fireplaces

Fireplaces are areas where traditionally homeowners built fires with wood in a hearth. Historically, fireplaces were used for both warmth and cooking. In a fireplace, the fire usually sits behind a grate to prevent hot coals from rolling out into a room. Wood fireplaces also sit at the base of a chimney to allow dangerous smoke and other fumes to exit the building through the roof.

In more recent times, fireplaces have been fuelled by gas and electricity. These newer fireplaces provide heat, but are cleaner because there are no ashes to remove, or chimneys to be swept.
4. What instrument was Chuck Mangione famous for playing? He had a hit with the single "Feels So Good" in 1978.

Answer: Flugelhorn

The flugelhorn is a brass instrument that is similar to a trumpet or cornet. It is slightly larger than a trumpet, which in turn is larger than the cornet. The flugelhorn is usually tuned to B-flat like the trumpet and cornet. Mangione started his musical career playing the trumpet, but switched to the flugelhorn in the 1970s.

In 1977, he released the album "Feels So Good", then a single by the same name in early 1978. Although it was an instrumental song that was released at a time when songs with lyrics were popular, it reached #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart.
5. What is another name for fancy clothes such as gowns and tuxedoes?

Answer: Formalwear

Formalwear is a style of dress worn in Western countries for both men and women. This can be divided into styles worn before 6:00 pm, and styles worn in the evening. Styles that are worn earlier in the day include men's morning coats, while white tie tuxedoes are worn after 6:00 pm if formalwear is required. Formalwear for women includes gowns, with the most formal of those being ball gowns. Formalwear accessories for men include top hats. Formalwear accessories for women include decorative hats, long gloves, and heeled dress pumps. Formalwear may also include dress uniforms such as those seen worn by Queen Elizabeth II's family members during her funeral.
6. What sort of bracelet can you make by braiding colourful threads together?

Answer: Friendship

Friendship bracelets are made with brightly coloured string. In many cases, embroidery floss is used. Knots and braids are used to create a variety of patterns. Friendship bracelets are meant to be made by one person who then gives them to their friends.

They are unisex, so can be worn by anyone. The friendship bracelets are supposed to be worn until they wear out and fall off on their own as a way of symbolizing appreciation for the work that was put in to creating the unique jewelry.
7. What can you add to the soil for healthier growing conditions in your gardens and lawns?

Answer: Fertilizer

Fertiliser, or fertilizer, is anything that is added to the soil to give it nutrients. Farmers typically use commercially manufactured fertilisers that contain nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K). The fertiliser used on large farms is applied in a variety of formats (e.g., liquid or pellets) using a variety of tools or machines. On the other hand, natural and organic fertilisers tend to be used on a smaller scale by home gardeners. Natural fertilizers include animal manure, compost, blood meal, and bone meal.
8. Before digital photography became all the rage, what were used to ensure that there was enough light in a room to take a picture?

Answer: Flashcubes

Flashcubes started to be used in the mid-1960s. Before then, single-use flashbulbs were used to provide enough light to illuminate a room enough. for an interior photo. Those flashbulbs got very hot when they fired, and sometimes shattered when a photo was taken. This led to cuts and burns when taking photos, a hazard that many will remember.

The flashcube was developed in 1965 by Eastman-Kodak to fit with their new line of portable cameras. Each hand-held camera had a receptacle on top where the flashcube was plugged. Each flashcube contained four small flashbulbs that were enclosed within the plastic cube. This prevented the problems of burns and cuts that had been issues with previous versions of flash technology. After a photo was taken and a flash used, the film was advanced to the next frame by the thumb. When this happened, the flashcube rotated a quarter-turn, ready for the next shot. They came in a package of three, just enough for the twelve shots on a typical roll of film.
9. What is pink insulation in homes typically made from?

Answer: Fiberglass

Fibreglass (aka fiberglass) is a type of plastic that is reinforced with glass fibre. It can be spun to create a fluffy insulation that is used in walls and ceilings. It can also be used in a number of other applications. The strength of fibreglass allows it to be molded into car bodies, surfboards, storage tanks, pole vaulting poles, axe handles, water pipes, helicopter blades, safety helmets, orthopaedic casts, water slides, and many other items we use every day that require strength and durability.
10. What are the impressions called that we leave behind when walking on soft soil?

Answer: Footprints

When humans leave impressions in the soil when they have bare feet, those impressions are known as footprints. There are types of footprints sometimes left. When humans leave impressions when they have shoes on, the images left are known as shoe prints. On the other hand, when animals leave prints when walking in soft soil, those are known as paw prints or hoof prints.

Footprints are used in a variety of ways. These include detective work and pop culture. In forensic science, footprints can be analyzed to determine in which direction a criminal fled. They can determine whether a criminal was walking or running, since they will be placed further away if the criminal was running. Detectives can also use footprints to estimate the sex, weight, and height of the perpetrator. Women tend to have smaller feet, so will leave smaller footprints. Heavier people will leave deeper footprints. Scientists have also determined that the foot length tends to be about 15% of a person's height, so estimates of the criminal's height can be made that way.

In pop culture, footprints are preserved at monuments such as the footprints of celebrities that are encased in concrete outside Grauman's Chinese Theatre in California. Footprints are also made of newborn babies' feet in some countries as a keepsake for parents. There is also a Christian poem called "Footprints" that is quite popular amongst many Christians.
