Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Fenella (Ellie) Guteman
Answer: Endless Night
If ever a victim did not deserve her fate, it was Ellie. She was a very sweet, lovable girl but when you are a rich heiress, there's always somebody scheming to relieve you of your fortune. She died because someone laced her allergy capsules with cyanide. At the conclusion of the novel, we learn that Ellie was one of six victims.
2. Emily Caroline Brent
Answer: And Then There Were None
Emily Caroline Brent did not actually kill anyone. But her self-righteous attitude and lack of compassion led to the death of her maid, Beatrice Taylor. Beatrice became pregnant out of wedlock and Emily promptly turned her out of the house. As a result, Beatrice drowned herself in the river. Emily felt no guilt about driving Beatrice to suicide but somebody thought otherwise and decided Emily needed to pay.
She was murdered with a lethal injection of potassium cyanide.
3. Linnet Ridgeway
Answer: Death on the Nile
Linnet Ridgeway was a wealthy heiress accustomed to always getting her own way and always having everything she wanted. Friendship meant nothing when what she wanted, and got, was her best friend's man. Linnet was shot in the head whilst she slept. Although she was the first victim to die on the SS Karnak, she wasn't the last.
4. Alice Ascher
Answer: The ABC Murders
Alice Ascher of Andover, an elderly lady, was the first victim in a series known as "The ABC Murders". Her only "crime" was having the right initials to fit the murderer's desired pattern. She was killed by a blow to the back of the head. Although there appeared to be no obvious motive, there was method in the killer's madness.
5. Helen Kennedy Halliday
Answer: Sleeping Murder
The murder of Helen Halliday (nee Kennedy) was undiscovered for many years because it was believed that she had run away with another man to escape an unhappy marriage. Miss Marple was astute enough to realise that Helen had not escaped but had been murdered.
She further surmised that Helen's body was actually buried in the grounds of her own home. The police unearthed Helen's remains exactly where Miss Marple predicted they would be. Helen died of strangulation.
6. Arlena Stuart
Answer: Evil Under the Sun
Arlena Stuart was the sort of woman that other women loathed but men flocked to. She flirted outrageously and had several affairs whilst married to Captain Kenneth Marshall. Arlena was found dead of strangulation. As a murder victim, she elicited little sympathy from her fellow guests at the hotel.
7. Aristide Leonides
Answer: Crooked House
Poor Aristide was such an astute businessman but failed to recognise the danger within his own household. He actually provided the killer with a blueprint for his murder. Aristide died when someone substituted his insulin with eserine, also known as physostigmine (eye drops).
8. Verity Hunt
Answer: Nemesis
Verity Hunt was murdered and her lover, Michael Rafiel, was convicted for the crime. But he didn't do it and his father, Jason Rafiel, makes a posthumous request, via his will, for Miss Marple to get to the truth of the matter. In doing so, Miss Marple discovers that Verity was poisoned and love was the terrible motive behind the murder.
9. Mona Symmington
Answer: The Moving Finger
Mona Symmington was the wife of the village solicitor. She received a nasty anonymous letter intimating that her younger son was not her husband's child. When Mona died, it was assumed she committed suicide whilst temporarily insane, precipitated by the accusation. Every afternoon she took a cachet (a rice paper envelope containing powdered medication) for her sciatica.
Her killer laced her cachet with potassium cyanide.
10. Henry Morley
Answer: One, Two, Buckle My Shoe
Henry Morley, Hercule Poirot's dentist, was the victim of a murder of convenience. The killer simply needed Henry out of the way so he could replace him and pose as the dentist in order to murder a second victim. Dr Morley was shot in his dental surgery. The police concluded that he had committed suicide but Poirot did not believe that.
