Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Heather Badcock
Answer: The Mirror Crack'd from Side to Side
There was no harm in Heather Badcock. All she ever wanted to do was to help people - whether they wanted help or not. When Heather died from drinking a poisoned cocktail, everybody assumed that the poison was meant for the famous actress, Marina Gregg. Marina had given Heather her cocktail, the poisoned one, after Heather's drink was spilled.
But Heather's death was no accident - it was her past catching up with her.
2. Maggie Buckley
Answer: Peril at End House
Maggie Buckley was shot while wearing her cousin Nick's distinctive Chinese shawl of "vivid lacquer red". Prior to this, Nick had had four near misses from death. Was Maggie Buckley a victim of mistaken identity? There were no witnesses and no-one even noticed the gunshot because of the fireworks.
3. Ruby Keene
Answer: The Body in the Library
How often is a murderer caught because they talked too much and gave themselves away? This one contributed to his own downfall by describing Ruby Keene's teeth, which led Miss Marple to realise that the dead girl in Colonel Bantry's library was not Ruby Keene. We'll never know how Ruby died because her body was burnt to confuse the issue of identification and time of death.
She was likely either strangled or hit on the head.
4. Gladys Martin
Answer: A Pocket Full of Rye
Gladys Martin made the mistake of falling in love with the wrong man. He was a villain who used her to be his unwitting accomplice in murder. Once his objective was accomplished, poor Gladys became another of his victims when he strangled her with a stocking while she was at the clothesline. Miss Marple was very angry when she learned that the murderer had clipped a clothes-peg on Gladys's nose, echoing the words of the old nursery rhyme, "Sing a Song of Sixpence".
She regarded it as "a cruel, contemptuous gesture".
5. Rachel Argyle
Answer: Ordeal by Innocence
Rachel Argyle was a wealthy and warm-hearted woman. Before this novel begins, Rachel had been found bludgeoned to death. Jacko Argyle, one of her five adopted children, was convicted of the murder and he died whilst in gaol. Although too late to save Jacko, a witness came forward who was able to clear his name posthumously.
But instead of being grateful for the truth being revealed, the family were unhappy because it meant that someone else in the household was guilty. Who really murdered Rachel?
6. Louise Charpentier
Answer: Third Girl
Louise Carpenter (known as Louise Charpentier, the French version of her name) died from injuries received as a result of a fall from a seventh floor flat. Her death was initially thought to be suicide but in reality she was pushed because she was the only person who could reveal that somebody was not the person he claimed to be - somebody who had an awful lot to lose if the truth came out.
7. Anthony Marston
Answer: And Then There Were None
Anthony James Marston was accused of murdering two children, John and Lucy Combes, whose deaths were caused by his reckless driving. Although it was an accident, he had no remorse. In fact, he considered the incident a "beastly nuisance" because his licence was suspended for a year. Marston was the first victim to be murdered on Soldier Island.
He died after his whiskey was laced with cyanide.
8. Salome Otterbourne
Answer: Death on the Nile
Closet alcoholic Salome Otterbourne was in the wrong place at the wrong time and saw what she should not have seen. Mrs Otterbourne was on deck to surreptitiously collect some bottles of alcohol from one of the crew members when she witnessed the killer of Louise Bourget enter her cabin. Louise was stabbed in the heart because she was blackmailing the killer. Mrs Otterbourne was shot just as she was about to reveal what she saw to Hercule Poirot, Colonel Race and Simon Doyle.
9. Emily French
Answer: Witness for the Prosecution
Miss Emily French was a wealthy elderly widow who developed a fondness for Leonard Vole and left him most of her money in her will. When Emily was found murdered, killed by a blow from a crowbar, which was found lying on the floor beside her body, Leonard was the most obvious suspect, along with a nephew who had bullied money out of Emily in the past and was unable to be found. Leonard claimed to be unaware he was Emily's beneficiary but the maid, Janet MacKenzie, was adamant that Emily had told him.
10. Rosemary Barton
Answer: Sparkling Cyanide
Rosemary Barton was poisoned at her own birthday party with champagne laced with potassium cyanide. Potassium cyanide was also found in her evening purse. Everybody at the table that night had a possible motive. Possible candidates included her affair partner, her lover's wife, her husband, her husband's secretary, the mysterious friend, and her sister, the heir to her fortune. Possible motives included money, love, jealousy, threat of exposure and protection of reputation.
