The Theories of Alan F. Alford Quiz

As given in his book 'Pyramid of Secrets'. I have tried to give something but leave enough out of the interesting information so that I do not do him out of royalties because you think you do not need to read his book.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What does Mr. Alford say is the root of Egyptian religion?

Answer: The creation myth.

Some people who say it is sun worship say the pyramid is inspired by the shape sometimes produced by sunbeams shining through cloud.
Note that precession means the pole star changes. Just before the pyramids were built (2700bce) the pole star was Thuban in Draco which is about five times fainter than Polaris.
2. What does Mr. Alford say the great pyramid's purpose was?

Answer: A sort of time capsule for future generations (and a tomb).

His theory is that the Egyptians believed civilisation would be destroyed by a catastrophe and return towards the primal chaos so the contents of the pyramid would help restore civilisation.
Most Egyptologists go for the "Nothing but a tomb" theory.
3. If the conventional theories are correct what is unusual about Khufu's (Cheops) burial chamber?

Answer: It is above ground level

Alford says it is unique (but some plans of other pyramids I have seen seem to show burial chambers above ground level). Also the Egyptians said 'the body to the earth' and 'the spirit to the sky'.
Inscriptions did not start till the reign of Unas - last king of the 5th dynasty - about 2375bc as opposed to 2570bc.
4. How many niches are there in the walls of the Grand Gallery in the Great Pyramid?

Answer: 54

The Egyptians often grouped their gods into triads (mother, father and child) and enneads - that is groups of three triads. 54 is three triads on each side.
5. What is there in the so-called trial passages of the Great Pyramid that indicates a possible unknown secret passage?

Answer: An extra passage

The trial passages are cut in the rock near the pyramid and have the same plan as part of the passages built into the pyramid - plus one passage - a possible unknown secret passage?
6. Is there a variation in the jointing of the stones opposite the end of a passage that was once hidden, in the Great Pyramid?

Answer: yes

In several places the regular pattern of joints changes. It is possible these places point to hidden passages, For instance Piazzi Smyth, astronomer royal for Scotland (and one of the sources of the theory that the great pyramid encoded the secrets of the universe) noted an unusual joint where the once hidden ascending passage joined the descending passage.
7. The modern entrance to the Great Pyramid is via a tunnel supposedly built by Calif al-Mamun in AD820. Who does Mr Alford say made it?

Answer: Ancient Egyptians breaking out

The theory is that Al-Mamun only re excavated an ancient robbers' tunnel. The robbers entered via the descending passage and well shaft but needed a larger tunnel to get their loot out.
8. What is unique (Mr. Alford says) about the roof of the grand gallery of the Great Pyramid?

Answer: The flat part of the roof is unusually wide.

Corbelling is a method of roofing where each layer of stones projects slightly out from the previous layer. It can span surprisingly large distances.
There are six corbelled chambers in the Red and Bent pyramids which all have a much narrower roof.
He believes this is significant and needs investigating - but it is 28 feet (8.5 metres) high over a sloping floor.
9. What reason does Mr. Alford say is most probable for the rough floor of the queen's chamber?

Answer: The floor slabs were valuable and so were stolen

The queens' chamber is so called because its roof has the same shape as the top of a woman's grave in modern Egyptian tradition and the king's chamber is like a man's tomb.
It has a unique corbelled niche off centre in one of its sides.
10. Which of these is an area of the Great Pyramid Mr. Alford lists?

Answer: All of them

The grotto does not appear in many plans. It is a small chamber and was probably a natural cavern and is reached by the narrow well shaft. The archaeologist J.P. Lepre (who among other things found three anomalous features outside the Great Pyramid that might be entrances to passages) says its ceiling is 'damp caked sand'.
I have not covered all his theories - including the most interesting one (in my opinion).
