Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who tells this story?

Answer: Dolly Bantry

Dolly Bantry warns that she is not a very good storyteller before she starts. Nevertheless, the abruptness of her story shocks the guests. They take it in turns to question her to gain more information.
2. Where does this story take place?

Answer: Cloddenham Court

The Bantrys were staying at the grand home of their friend Sir Ambrose who lives at Cloddenham Court.
3. What was the name of the girl who died?

Answer: Sylvia Keene

Sylivia was the ward of Sir Ambrose and died after dinner one night. All the people who ate were ill, but she was the worst affected.
4. What word does Mrs. Bantry use that she says describes Sir Ambrose best?

Answer: Courtly

She says that Sir Ambrose is courtly but she also mentions that he was ill and had some sort of heart trouble.
5. What was the name of the dead girl's fiance?

Answer: Jerry

Jerry was engaged to Sylvia and had been for some time as Sir Ambrose opposed them actually marrying. He was, however, said to be coming round to the idea despite the fact that he thought they were too young.
6. What was the poison that killed Sylvia and made the others ill?

Answer: Digitalis

The foxglove was planted in the garden amongst some herbs. When it was served for dinner, it was done so as sage.
Digitalin or digitalis is the medical term for what is actually in the foxglove to cause harm.
7. How long had Maude Wye been staying in the house?

Answer: A fortnight

Maud Wye was a friend of Sylvia's. Mrs. Bantry says that she had caught her once or twice looking at Jerry, Sylvia's fiance, and thought that she was in love with him. Later, she saw them kiss.
8. One of the guests was absent from dinner on the night the foxglove was served.

Answer: False

All of the house was present at dinner. This causes a problem as it means that the culprit was willing to eat the foxglove him/herself in order to poison another at the table.
9. Who inherited Cloddenham Court after Sir Ambrose's death?

Answer: His son

Although he quarelled with him, the house had to be willed to Sir Ambrose's son as this had already been decided by preceding wills. His money was left to Sylvia Keene, even though she was already dead by the time Sir Ambrose died. Mrs. Bantry isn't sure what happened to the money after that.
10. Who was the murderer?

Answer: Sir Ambrose

Miss Marple spots that Sir Ambrose's opposition to Sylvia and Jerry marrying pointed to him being in love with her himself. He took digitalis for his heart so it was easy for him to make sure that Sylvia had a large amount of the substance.
