"Xanth Series" Book Four "Centaur Aisle" Quiz

The "Xanth" series by Piers Anthony are books I loved as a kid, and I find equally enjoyable today. This quiz concerns the fourth book in the series: "Centaur Aisle". I hope you enjoy this quiz as much as I did revisiting this magical land.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The story begins with Dor forced to write a 100 word essay about the land of Xanth. He decides to mention a few Mundane monsters for comparison. Which of these Mundanian creatures did he mention?

Answer: bare

Dor is a notoriously bad speller, and the Spelling Bee Irene captures and forces to help him only makes matters worse as it is mad so it spells out homophones instead of the correct words. He also mentions a hoarse and actually spells everything wrong throughout his whole essay.
2. King Trent sends a message to Dor that he would like to speak with him in his study. Once Dor arrives he informs him that he and Queen Iris are leaving Xanth on a trade mission to Mundania and that Dor will rule Xanth as practice. What course does he tell Dor to follow if in doubt?

Answer: Honesty

Dor was actually terrified of even pretending to rule Xanth, even though the Elders would be available for guidance. King Trent told him the best course of action should always be honesty...which would influence Dor's actions probably even more than Trent could have hoped.
3. King Trent chose Dor as his successor if anything happened to him and Queen Iris in Mundania, even though Irene was his daughter. Why was Dor the heir apparent and Irene not the next in line for the throne?

Answer: Xanth law did not allow females to rule

At this time Xanth law prohibited females from ruling and to make it worse Irene's talent was judged to be slightly sub-magician level although even if that was not the case she still would have not been accepted by the Elders as ruler.
4. The day for King Trent and Queen Iris' return went by without their actual return. Dor and Irene decide they could use some help until the king and queen's return. Who did they not ask to help them out?

Answer: Lacuna

Dor and Irene felt that the friends that were their age could help them in making decisions. Grundy could gather information, Smash had the strength to deal with any physical issues and Chet, being an educated centaur, could help them with tough mental decisions., Lacuna was at this time way too young to be of much help.
5. Dor met with Roland to determine the best course of action and it was decided that Dor should go and speak with Humfrey. As usual he had to pass three tests in order to enter Humfrey's castle. Which of these was not a challenge Dor faced?

Answer: A Tangletree

Dor masqueraded himself as a zombie and fooled the Zombie Sea Monster into letting him pass. He then found himself on a glass mountain and balked by a goat like creature called a Sidehill Hoofer which he tricked by feeding it hay and forcing it to carry him up the glass mountain where he found a secret entrance which opened at the top.
6. As Dor and company leave Humfrey's castle they head south where they are attacked by a Pride of Loins. In order to escape the Loins they head into a secret cave in which a pirate had stashed his treasure. Which of these objects did Dor not find in the pirate's secret stash?

Answer: A bottle of rum

The gold and diamonds were actually useless in Xanth but men still find themselves coveting them. The jar contained a salve which had magical properties of its own, although it also contained a curse and there simply was no rum there.
7. As Dor slept upon the raft he had a dream where King Trent gave him a clue as to how to reach him and Queen Iris. What did King Trent tell Dor in the dream?

Answer: To use the Isle

Dor and company were headed south to locate the newly discovered centaur magician but that was not what Trent wanted Dor to do specifically. Beauregard could have been some help but was nowhere near the party at the time. What Trent wanted Dor to use was the "Aisle", which Dor in his mind spelled as "Isle".
8. Arnolde told the Dor the story of how the centaurs, according to legend, came into existence. What did Arnolde tell Dor was the name of the man who was the fore-father of the centaurs?

Answer: Alpha

Arnolde told Dor a long story about how three Mundane soldiers and their mares actually were the ultimate ancestors of all of the centaurs. He admitted the story seemed somewhat fanciful but he still hoped, it had at least, a small basis in fact.
9. Dor and company proceed to the Mundania border and use their various talents to find whether King Trent and Queen Iris crossed into Mundania at various locations along the path. What was the main issue stopping them from locating the crossing point?

Answer: Time discontinuity

While it is easy to exit Xanth (although much harder to enter) you will never know when you exit. While it appears most exits lead into Medieval times or earlier occasionally this will not be true. Thus, Dor and his group had to first locate the right time frame, and then find out where Trent and Iris crossed.
10. Arnolde convinces Dor that if he could find a Mundane archivist perhaps he could help them in locating King Trent and Queen Iris. They meet Ichabod who after some research decides that it is most likely the missing king and queen probably went into what Mundania kingdom?

Answer: Onesti

Back in the beginning of the book King Trent tells Dor to always follow one course of action. Dor hears (and in his head spells it wrong). Trent did not mean "honesty", although a probably good course of action to follow, instead he was dropping a hint that he was traveling to a kingdom called Onesti.
11. Ichabod and Arnolde discovered that King Trent and Queen Iris were attempting to set up a trade route with a small kingdom which was bordered by three larger kingdoms. What were the names of the three larger neighbors?

Answer: The Avars, Bulgars and Khazars

Arnolde finds a map which shows the three kingdoms which pretty much surround Onesti, and he also finds that Onesti has, through mostly geographical concerns, maintained its independence for many years. He believes this would have been a perfect kingdom for King Trent to have attempted to set up a trade route with.
12. King Oary drugged Dor and company and imprisoned them in his dungeon. Dor and Irene managed to formulate a plan of escape. How did they manage to escape the guard's notice while discussing their plans?

Answer: They used a code where affirmative meant negative and vice versa

Dor and Irene actually proposed to each other and professed their feelings using a system of squeezing hands signifying positive and negative feelings. They were actually speaking their language but one of the guards understood the language. Irene and Dor could not have used their talents as they were in Mundania.
13. Dor, and company escaped the dungeons but were pursued by Oary's soldiers. Irene planted a resurrection plant which confused the soldiers. Which of these images did the soldiers not see?

Answer: Dor as a brother

The resurrection plant caused the soldiers to see deceased loved ones. Irene, Smash and Grundy then convinced them to cease the chase and show Oary as the impostor. Dor actually looked back and saw Jumper which was very upsetting to him.
14. Once Dor and company have rescued King Omen and placed him back in control of Onesti, Dor is given the task to decide what to do with Oary. What does he decide to do to the impostor to the throne?

Answer: Make him Ambassador

Dor figures the worst thing he can do, without killing him, would be to make him an ambassador to the Khazars, a war-like people who are bent on conquest. He decides it will take all of Oary's guile simply to stay alive and thus he should be no danger to Onesti in the future.
15. It was discovered early in the story that Arnolde was actually a magician. What was his talent?

Answer: Projected a magic aisle

Arnolde could cause magic to happen within a small aisle which surrounded his body. Somehow Trent knew of this and knew that this would be invaluable in Mundania as then any citizen of Xanth could do his talent outside of Xanth.
