The biographical film, "A Complete Unknown" was released at Christmas 2025 in the United States. The story of Bob Dylan's rise to fame from 1961 to 1965 was captured in the film. Timothee Chalamet played the lead role and his girlfriend, Sylvie Russo, was played by Elle Fanning. Russo's character was based on Dylan's real girlfriend at the time, Suze Rotolo. The film opened with Dylan meeting his hero, folk singer Woody Guthrie in the hospital. While visiting Guthrie, he met Pete Seeger. Seeger was portrayed by actor Ed Norton and Seeger invited Dylan to perform at the New York City folk clubs.
At his first performance, an open microphone night, Dylan met Joan Baez who was headlining at the event. Both Joan and music manager Albert Grossman are so impressed by Dylan's performance. Grossman took on Dylan as a client and they began production on his debut album. While the debut album did not sell well, it did catch the eye of Columbia Records executive John Hammond, who signed Dylan to his label.
The relationship triangle between Dylan, Sylvie Russo, and Joan Baez became an integral part of the film as each had an effect on Dylan's songwriting. Bob and Joan had an affair, recorded together, and became each other's muse while Sylvie stayed true to Dylan until the film's climactic scene in the final moments.
As Dylan's popularity soared, his creative energy saw a chance to shake up the traditional folk scene which recorded with primarily acoustic instruments. While recording the album "Highway 61 Revisted", Dylan added the electric guitar with Mike Bloomfield and Al Kooper on piano and organ. The studio session produced the monumental hit "Like A Rolling Stone".
At the annual 1965 Newport Folk Festival, Dylan headlined the show. Other performers at the event included the legendary country singer, Johnny Cash, and Peter Yarrow and Paul Stookey from the band Peter, Paul, and Mary. Dylan "going electric" and playing "Like A Rolling Stone" with amps, electric guitars, and high energy stunned the folk crowd but showcased Bob's changing philosophy on what folk music could become.
