Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The First Born Son

A young boy and, per the ritual, cited to be the least harmful of the thirteen ghosts, 'The First Born Son' was killed while playing a seemingly-harmless game with another boy. Struck in the head with an arrow, he would suffer a fate beyond death when he was captured and trapped in the house with no one his age to play with.

In the film, this ghost rarely appears, only showing up to urge the houseguests that he wants to play. That said, he doesn't really lead anyone into danger, at least not intentionally. He's the first ghost to be freed from his chamber, and Bobby finds him when he heads downstairs.
2. The Torso

Somehow, this ghost is more of a threat to people than The First Born Son, as it's the second to be released. Even then, it's amazing that it's considered at all since it's the only ghost that can't seem to move itself around on two legs, having been chopped up into pieces and wrapped in plastic by the mafia.

When Bobby runs into this ghost in the basement, it's struggling to move towards him, lifting and dragging itself along without all of its pieces coming along.
3. The Bound Woman

Named as such because she was tied up before her death, The Bound Woman was killed on her prom night, caught cheating by her boyfriend. She was subsequently buried in the football field of her school and exhumed by Cyrus to be used in his infernal machine.

When she becomes the third ghost freed in the house, she does very little by comparison to the others, appearing only to Bobby, and even then only just in her normal wandering. She is harmless compared to nearly all others, possibly because she continues to be bound in death.
4. The Withered Lover

A unique ghost to the Kriticos family, the Withered Lover was actually Arthur's wife (and Kathy and Bobby's mother), plucked from the afterlife by Cyrus and placed into the house when she passed away in a hospital fire a year prior to the film.

While Jean Kriticos doesn't act harmful towards anyone who gets trapped in the house, she does reappear, briefly, after the infernal machine is destroyed, to say her final goodbyes to her family, making her the only ghost to have an actual conversation in the throes of all the action.
5. The Torn Prince

A ghost from the 1950s, The Torn Prince's backstory isn't fully apparent from his brief appearances in the accursed house, though he's said to have been a baseball player and greaser in his life, killed when someone cut his brake lines before a drag race.

In his appearances in the film, he's seen with his baseball bat in-hand and he does come across as a more temperamental ghost, never actually grievously harming anyone, but assaulting people enough to cause concern.
6. The Angry Princess

One of the more modern ghosts of the set, The Angry Princess is a tragic, yet vain spirit who committed suicide after a series of botched cosmetic surgery procedures that she performed on her own body. She would end up brutally maiming her own body in her bathtub.

In the house, this ghost is set free, unbeknownst to the living people inside, only to make her way up to Kathy's bathtub. She ends up being the first ghost to emerge from her containment chamber, inadvertently causing the estate lawyer to accidentally place himself between two chambers, bisecting him in the house's shuddering early movements.
7. The Pilgrimess

Perhaps the oldest ghost of the bunch, The Pilgrimess is only ever seen in the stocks that she died in, back in the days of early America. Believed to be a witch, it's actually more likely that she was an innocent woman who encountered coincidental circumstances; the villagers tried to kill her many times before.

In the house, she doesn't do too much damage, only emerging to chase people through the narrow corridors once in a while.
8. The Great Child

Perhaps one of the largest ghosts, The Great Child is anything but child-sized, appearing to people as a full-grown man coddled into his later years, having gorged on food at the behest of his mother. Backstory implies that he was found after being executed by a circus owner.

In the house, he doesn't seem to take any actions that harm the living beings within, making him one of the latest in the Black Zodiac to be quite harmless.
9. The Dire Mother

Although well-intentioned, The Dire Mother is a notable inclusion in the Black Zodiac because she was brought into the fray with her son, The Great Child, being intrinsically bound to him in their deaths. Responsible for feeding into her son's gluttony, she was both the reason the pair were part of the circus and part of the reason they were killed. Neither she nor her son cause any critical damage during the film, even though they may be grotesque when they're finally encountered.
10. The Hammer

One of the more dangerous ghosts of the Black Zodiac, The Hammer is a hulking spectre seen covered in railroad spikes, having been murdered by a racist mob before having his hand replaced with his own murder weapon (a sledgehammer).

The Hammer proves to be one of the more fearsome foes encountered as his attacks, performed with the hefty blow of his weapon, are enough to test the limits of the house's protected, glass walls. Psychic Dennis Rafkin is killed when The Hammer teams up with perhaps the most dangerous ghost in the Zodiac.
11. The Jackal

One of the house's more insatiable and dangerous ghosts, The Jackal is a spirit born out of insanity, having spent most of his life locked away (of his own volition, initially) in an insane asylum. He would perish there in a fire, but his spirit would still retain some of the trappings of his former life, notably a straitjacket and a head cage.

The Jackal manages to cause more harm than most ghosts in the film, attacking both Kathy and Arthur during his escape through the corridors. This being said, he's kept at bay most of the time by flares, a clear indication that he still harbours fear towards the fires that took his life.
12. The Juggernaut

The last of the ghosts to be obtained for the house before the Kriticos family moves in, The Juggernaut was a tough acquisition for Cyrus (and Dennis by his side) as they needed to bring a crew into the ghost's former stomping grounds, at risk to their own lives. Dennis' involvement in this provided quite a bit of irony as it was The Juggernaut who ended his life, breaking his back against the walls in the basement of the house.

In life and death, The Juggernaut happened to be the most prolific murderer of the set.
13. The Broken Heart

When the Kriticos family arrived at the house it only contained twelve ghosts, and their invitation was actually a trap. When Cyrus had reached his final stages, he faked his death to encourage Arthur and his family to move in, intending for Arthur to fill the role of The Broken Heart to make the machine fully operational.

It never happened; while Arthur saved his kids without losing his life, Cyrus was killed by the ghosts he captured, tossed into the machine during its malfunction.
