Many of these characters became famous for their movie deaths. Let's take a look at how each one finds their end:
Charles Foster Kane - "Citizen Kane": Kane dies alone in his mansion, Xanadu, after uttering the word "Rosebud." His death comes from natural causes, and the meaning of his final word becomes the mystery that drives the film.
John Coffey - "The Green Mile": Coffey is executed in the electric chair after being convicted of murdering two girls, even though he is innocent. He accepts his death because he is exhausted by the cruelty and suffering he senses in the world.
Jack Dawson - "Titanic": After the Titanic sinks, Jack helps Rose stay on a floating piece of wreckage while he remains in the freezing Atlantic. He eventually dies from hypothermia and slips beneath the water.
Private Pyle - "Full Metal Jacket": After being psychologically broken down during Marine training, Pyle shoots his drill instructor, Gunnery Sergeant Hartman, in a bathroom. He then turns the rifle on himself and dies by suicide.
Vincent Vega - "Pulp Fiction": Vincent is surprised by Butch after leaving a bathroom in Butch's apartment. Butch grabs Vincent's own submachine gun and shoots him several times.
Mufasa - "The Lion King": Mufasa rescues Simba from a wildebeest stampede and climbs to safety, but Scar throws him back into the gorge. He is killed beneath the stampeding wildebeests.
Sonny Corleone - "The Godfather": Sonny is lured into a trap while driving to confront his abusive brother-in-law. At a tollbooth, gunmen ambush him and kill him with a barrage of bullets.
Old Yeller - "Old Yeller": Old Yeller contracts rabies after defending the family from a rabid wolf. Travis is forced to shoot him to prevent him from becoming dangerous.
Maximus Decimus Meridius - "Gladiator": Before his final arena fight, Commodus secretly stabs Maximus to weaken him. Maximus still defeats and kills Commodus but dies shortly afterward from the wound.
Thelma Dickinson - "Thelma & Louise": Surrounded by police at the edge of the Grand Canyon, Thelma and Louise decide not to surrender. They drive their car off the cliff together, with their deaths implied as the film ends.
Donnie Darko - "Donnie Darko": After events in the film's alternate timeline are reversed, Donnie remains in his bedroom when a jet engine crashes through the roof. He is killed by the falling engine, preventing the alternate chain of events from occurring.
Llewelyn Moss - "No Country for Old Men": Moss is tracked to a motel in El Paso, where Mexican drug dealers attack him. His death occurs largely off-screen, and Sheriff Bell arrives afterward to find his body.
The other characters all survive their films:
Atticus Finch - "To Kill a Mockingbird": After Bob Ewell attacks Scout and Jem, Boo Radley intervenes and saves them. Atticus accepts that Ewell's death will be treated as an accident, and the film ends with him watching over Jem.
Dorothy Gale - "The Wizard of Oz": Dorothy learns that her ruby slippers can take her home. She clicks her heels, returns to Kansas, and wakes surrounded by her family and friends.
Clarice Starling - "The Silence of the Lambs": Clarice tracks down and kills Buffalo Bill, rescuing Catherine Martin. She later graduates from the FBI Academy while Hannibal Lecter, now escaped, calls her from afar.
Edward Scissorhands - "Edward Scissorhands": After killing Jim in self-defense, Edward remains alone in the castle. Kim tells the townspeople that Edward died, protecting him from further pursuit.
Forrest Gump - "Forrest Gump": After Jenny dies, Forrest raises their young son. The film ends with Forrest seeing him off to school.
Andy Dufresne - "The Shawshank Redemption": Andy escapes from Shawshank through a tunnel he secretly dug over many years. He begins a new life in Mexico, where Red eventually joins him.
Will Hunting - "Good Will Hunting": Will leaves Boston and drives to California to pursue a relationship with Skylar, choosing a new direction for his life.
Ferris Bueller - "Ferris Bueller's Day Off": Ferris makes it home just before his parents return and avoids being caught. He ends the film having successfully pulled off his elaborate day off from school.
