Princess Elsa and Princess Anna's parents are the King and Queen of Arendelle. The young sisters live in a large palace and play together as all sisters do - except for the fact that Elsa can make and control snow. They even create a living snowman named Olaf together. After a terrible accident, the Grand Pabbie, King of the Trolls, suggests that Elsa must be isolated until she learns how to better control her power, and that the memory of that power must be wiped clean from Anna's mind.

The sisters are kept apart for years, even after the deaths of their parents. It is not until Elsa's twenty-first birthday, when she is to become the new Queen of Arendelle, that the carefully guarded secret is revealed by mistake. Arendelle is plunged into a deep, cold winter. Elsa flees the kingdom, and when Anna follows she is not prepared for the cold and snow; assistance is provided by a merchant, Oaken, an iceman named Kristoff, and his reindeer, Sven.

It takes some strong persuasion to convince Elsa to return to her kingdom - in fact, she even created Marshmallow, the huge snow monster, to try to get her sister to leave her alone. But when she returns to Arendelle to try and undo her magic, and there are the scheming Hans and Duke of Weselton to deal with too. Elsa and Anna, however, do eventually find that their love for each other can prevail.
