Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "The Cabinet of Dr Caligari" (1920), much of the plot leading towards the end of the movie is a recounting of events from the perspective of Franzis, sitting in a park. Towards the end, a plot twist occurs, revealing what information about Franzis?

Answer: He is a mental asylum patient

Towards the end of the movie, Franzis labels a man as 'Dr Caligari', who actually turns out to be the director of the mental asylum Franzis is staying at. Franzis ends up attacking him, only to be restrained and confined in a cell later shortly before the film ends.

"The Cabinet of Dr Caligari" is a classic German expressionist horror film. As previously mentioned, much of the movie is a flashback from the perspective of Franzis. Franzis' flashback depicts a number of surprising, somewhat horrifying things, the most prominent being the usage of the somnambulant Cesare to carry out murders on behalf of a wicked hypnotist.
2. In "How the Grinch Stole Christmas!" (1966), who voices the titular Grinch?

Answer: Boris Karloff

This was one of the last performances during Karloff's electrifying 83-film career run, as he would soon retire and eventually die in 1969 at the age of 81 years old.

Interestingly, 'Boris Karloff' was actually just his professional moniker. He was known personally as William Henry Pratt. His performance in the Grinch film earned him a Grammy Award.
3. "Jaws" (1975) played host to what may have been a beautiful accident. In developing this movie, director Steven Spielberg deliberately opted to spend most of it suggesting the shark's presence, priming the audience for the appearance of the beast later down the road. What prompted Spielberg to do this?

Answer: Mechanical shortcomings

At the time, Spielberg employed an art department who was responsible for essentially designing the shark as what was essentially a gigantic mechanical action figure. Unfortunately, there were major complications designing a structurally intact mechanical shark, and this initially prompted Spielberg to spend most of the movie simply suggesting the presence of the shark, before the shark is finally revealed very late in the movie.

This style of directing is also said to have been inspired by the acclaimed horror director Alfred Hitchcock. This style of horror is great because it instils the fear of the unknown into the audience, which is arguably the most powerful type of fear there is. The audience doesn't know where the shark is, the audience doesn't know when the shark will strike, they only know that when it does, something terrible is probably going to happen.
4. In George Romero's "Zombi 2" (1979), what animal turns into a zombie and ends up killing a character partially on and off camera?

Answer: Hawk

The character Brian Hull, played by the actor Al Cliver, is abruptly attacked by a raging, feral hawk as he steps outside of the group's de facto encampment. The hawk is seen swooping in on him on camera, and his horrified expression is seen as well. Just before the hawk makes contact with his face, the camera pans out to the side and blood splatter is seen as Brian screams in agony.

The group later finds his body torn to pieces where he encountered the hawk, with the bird nowhere to be found.
5. Which of these celebrity guests makes an appearance in "The SpongeBob Movie" (2004)?

Answer: David Hasselhoff

Hasselhoff makes an appearance roughly in the middle of the movie, as he conveniently arrives to provide aid to SpongeBob and Patrick in the middle of their lengthy, arduous journey. Humorously, a conflict between the contracted bounty hunter Dennis and SpongeBob takes place while riding on the back of Hasselhoff as he swims across the ocean.

Hasselhoff's appearance mid movie is fairly brief, but he can be seen once more during the movie's credits.
6. During "The Simpsons Movie" (2007) what music band that exists in the real world tries to convince the city of Springfield to care more about cleaning the environment?

Answer: Green Day

This discussion doesn't last very long before Green Day gets booed and starts having garbage pelted at them. The barge the band is standing on collapses from the garbage and the band sinks underwater, presumably drowning.

This happens towards the start of the movie, and ends up being a foreshadowing of events to come. Later, Grandpa Simpson would have a vision akin to a prophecy, in which the collapse of the Environmental Protective Agency would eventually contribute to the completion erosion of humanity.
7. In "The Avengers" (2012), Loki begins to monologue about how he is a God that will not be inconvenienced by those beneath him. However, he is unable to complete this monologue, as the person he is monologuing to begins to smash him against the floor relentlessly before labelling Loki a 'puny God'. Who beats Loki senseless like this?

Answer: The Hulk

While The Avengers are busy fighting deeper in the city, The Hulk finds Loki on the third story of a building. Loki does not necessarily seem hostile towards The Hulk, but acts condescendingly towards him. However, Loki barely has time to monologue for about ten seconds before Hulk proceeds to grab him by the legs and start slamming him from side to side on the ground for a few seconds. Once The Hulk lets go of Loki, he walks away from him and mutters "puny god" after Loki's rant had involved him talking about himself as a god.
8. In "Insidious: Chapter 3" (2015), series regular Elise Rainier agrees to come out of retirement to briefly aid Quinn Brenner. Prior to retirement, what was Elise's job title?

Answer: Demonologist

As a demonologist, Elise had spent her career learning about and interacting with spirits in the other world away from the living. After the events of Insidious Chapter 2 result in Elise nearly being sealed away in the spirit world forever, she opts to finally retire.

At the behest of Quinn, she agrees to contact the spirit of his mother, Lily, who had passed away the year prior. Elise does this and quickly, inadvertently, makes contact with what she labels a "malevolent force", and dealing with this entity ends up becoming the premise of the movie.
9. In "Zombieland: Double Tap" (2019), the plot has advanced ten years from the events of the original "Zombieland". Here, the audience is introduced to three new types of zombie. What is one new type of zombie seen in this movie?

Answer: Hawkings

The zombie species term 'Hawkings' was coined as a means of referring to zombies who have retained parts of their human intelligence. The term is inspired by the real world scientist Stephen Hawking.

In addition to Hawkings, there are also 'Homers'. Homers refer to zombies which, opposite Hawkings, are particularly dumb and reckless even for a zombie. Similarly to Hawkings, 'Homers' are inspired by the cartoon character Homer Simpson, a character known for doing often egregiously dumb things in "The Simpsons."
10. In "Dragons on the Hill" (2024) the laws governing the land are known as the what?

Answer: Prima Doctrine

"Dragons on the Hill" was an independently made comedy movie made in 2024. It's based during the Bubonic Plague era. The movie is a comedy, so the Prima Doctrine is a play on the term 'Prima Donna'.
