Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 1922: "Nothing could be finer than to be in Carolina" when?

Answer: in the morning

Walter Donaldson and Gus Kahn wrote "Carolina in the Morning." It was first sung in the Broadway musical revue "The Passing Show of 1922." William Frawley sang it in the 1934 version of "The Lemon Drop Kid" and again in an episode of "I Love Lucy." He then sang it one more time in 1963 in an episode of "My Three Sons."
2. 1922: The most famous recording of this 1922 song was probably the 1948 recording by Hank Williams. What kind of blues did Hank have?

Answer: Lovesick

Cliff Friend and Irving Mills wrote "Lovesick Blues." It was first sung in the 1922 musical, "Oh, Ernest." Hank Williams first sang it on the radio show "Louisiana Hayride" in 1948.
3. 1922: If someone told a person to "watch for the mail, I'll never fail. If you don't get a letter, then you'll know I'm in jail," what song might they be singing?

Answer: Toot, Toot, Tootsie

Gus Kahn, Ernie Erdman, and Danny Russo wrote "Toot, Toot, Tootsie (Goo' Bye!)" in 1922. It was first sung in the Broadway musical, "Bombo." The first person to record the song was Al Jolson (a great version).

I first heard this song in an episode of "The Andy Griffith Show" called "Aunt Bee's Medicine Man." I liked it so much; I walked around the house for hours singing it with my Mom's help, trying to learn it, until my dad told me to sing something else because three hours of the same song is plenty.
4. 1923: Complete the title of this Christian hymn: "Great is Thy _______."

Answer: Faithfulness

"Great is Thy Faithfulness" was written by William M. Runyan and Thomas Chisholm. Since that time, it has been performed by many music artists. The song is based on the Bible verse found in Lamentations 3:23. It was also used often in Billy Graham's crusades.
5. 1923: What song contains the line, "Whose heart is achin' for breakin' each vow?"

Answer: Who's Sorry Now?

Ted Snyder composed the music for "Who's Sorry Now?" and Bert Kalmar and Harry Ruby wrote the lyrics. In 1923, Isham Jones had a hit when he recorded the song. Connie Francis had her first major hit in 1958 when she recorded this song, and it reached number four on Billboard's Hot 100.
6. 1924: What alliterative two words go at the beginning of the title of this Christmas carol, "____ ____ Merrily on High"?

Answer: Ding Dong

The music to "Ding Dong Merrily on High" was composed by French composer Jehan Tabourot as a dance tune called "Brahnle de l'Official," in the 1500s. English composer George Ratcliffe Woodward then added the lyrics to the carol in 1924. His interest may have inspired Woodward in church bells.
7. 1924: I have a silly question, but I can't recall the object. Does something "lose its flavor on the bedpost overnight?" Can you tell me what I am thinking of?

Answer: Spearmint

Billy Rose, Ernest Breuer, and Marty Bloom wrote: "Does the Spearmint Lose Its Flavor on the Bedpost Overnight?" The Happiness Boys first performed it in 1924. In 1959, when Lonnie Donegan recorded it, the word spearmint was changed to chewing gum because spearmint was a registered trademark, and they wouldn't play songs with trademarked words on the BBC.
8. 1924: Who is the "Vamp of Savannah" who is "hard-hearted"?

Answer: Hannah

"Hard Hearted Hannah, the Vamp of Savannah" was written by Milton Ager, Jack Yellen, Bob Bigelow, and Charles Bates. Since then, several people have recorded the song, including Ella Fitzgerald, Jim Croce, Bobby Darin, and The Nitty Gritty Dirty Band.

Bea Arthur sang the song on both "Maude" and "The Golden Girls."
9. 1924: What song contains the line: "I wandered around, and finally found, the somebody who could make me be true"?

Answer: It Had to Be You

Isham Jones and Gus Kahn wrote "It Had to Be You." It was a number-one hit for five weeks. Dooley Wilson performed it in the movie "Casablanca." He played Sam. Betty Hutton sang it in the 1945 movie, "Incendiary Blonde." Tina Louise sang it on "Gilligan's Island" in the second season when Ginger sang it to Gilligan. These are just a handful of times it has been used in film and television.

Many artists have recorded it, including Rod Stewart, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, and Harry Connick, Jr.
10. 1924: According to the song, there is tea for how many?

Answer: two

"Tea For Two" was written by Vincent Youmans and Irving Caesar. It was introduced in the musical "No, No, Nanette." Art Tatum won a Grammy Hall of Fame Award posthumously for his 1939 version of the song. Doris Day sang it in the movie musical of the same name, which was inspired by the musical "No, No, Nanette."
