Well, that's a little racier than I thought it was.

John Mellencamp had been around the block a few times before 1982's "Jack and Diane" pretty much made him a household name. He started out in the mid-1970s making music under the name "Johnny Cougar", a name pushed on him by his manager. His early albums didn't really do that well, but in 1979, he started showing promise with the album "John Cougar". It was his first album to reach the Billboard Top 200.

Then, 1982's "American Fool" changed everything. It featured "Hurts So Good" and you know it, "Jack and Diane". He'd found his voice: ordinary people, small towns, restlessness, hope, frustration. Maybe songs about regular people actually connect with regular people.

"Jack and Diane" reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in October 1982. Mellencamp has said the song was inspired in part by a 1962 movie version of Tennessee Williams' play "Sweet Bird of Youth," where Jack and Diane appear as characters. He took the names, built a completely new story around them, and created a classic earworm.

Eventually, he became big enough to finally drop the "Cougar".
