The Isley Brothers released "Shout" in 1959 but it reached only number 47 on the Hot 100.
In 1964, Lulu and the Luvvers took the song to number seven in the UK.
That same year, The Beatles covered the song for the British television special 'Around The Beatles'. All four shared lead vocals.
"Shout" was the debut single from Lulu (born Marie McDonald McLaughlin Lawrie in Glasgow, Scotland) and she went on to have a stellar career as a singer and actress.
2. "Stranger On The Shore"

"Stranger On The Shore" was an instrumental featuring Acker Bilk on clarinet. It reached number one in the USA and number two in the UK in 1961.
This was the first release by a British performer to top the Hot 100, staying there for seven weeks.
3. "My Guy"
Answer: Mary Wells
Smokey Robinson wrote and produced "My Guy", the last solo release by Mary Wells on Motown. It reached the top of the Hot 100 and made number five in the UK.
Mary Wells left Motown for 20th Century Fox with a $200,000 advance. Unfortunately her career stumbled and she retired from music in 1974. (There was to be a later comeback.)
4. "Johnny Angel"

"Johnny Angel" hit the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in 1962 after actress Shelley Fabares had sung it on 'The Donna Reed Show'.
Fabares was principally an actress, with a career that started in the 1950s. She had several television roles, and also starred in three movies with Elvis Presley.
5. "Walk Like A Man"
Answer: The Four Seasons
In 1963, The Four Seasons took "Walk Like A Man" to the top of the Hot 100 and it made number 12 in the UK. It was their third number one in the USA.
6. "Yeh Yeh"
Answer: Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames
"Yeh Yeh" was a UK number one for Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames in 1965. It made number 21 on the Hot 100.
This was the first of three UK chart toppers for Georgie Fame in the 1960s.
Georgie Fame later said of the song: "It was recorded originally by Mongo Santamaria. Jon Hendricks put lyrics to it and recorded it live at The Newport Jazz Festival. I played it up and down the country for months before we recorded it. We were wondering what to do as a single and somebody said, 'Why don't you do 'Yeh Yeh?' and it went down well."
7. "I Know A Place"
Answer: Petula Clark
"I Know A Place" was written for Petula Clark by Tony Hatch. Some Brits of a certain age among you will remember he wrote the theme music for the long-running television soap "Crossroads". Congratulate yourselves if you knew that Paul McCartney (yes, the Paul McCartney) wrote an updated theme for the show.
The song won a Grammy and hit number three on the Hot 100 and number one in the UK.
8. "Headline News"
Answer: Edwin Starr
In 1966, "Headline News" was a minor hit in the US for Edwin Starr, reaching number 84 on the Hot 100.
Years later it was the B side of a record in the UK and became popular on the Northern Soul scene.
9. "Don't Throw Your Love Away"
Answer: The Searchers
"Don't Throw Your Love Away" was recorded in the USA by The Orlons in 1963 as a B side.
In 1964, the British band The Searchers picked it up and took it to the top of the singles chart. This version also hit number 16 on the Hot 100.
The Searchers were a popular outfit in the UK in the early 1960s. However, while contemporaries like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones were writing their own songs, The Searchers kept covering those of other people. The Searchers lost their way by 1965.
10. "Let's Dance"
Answer: Chris Montez
"Hey, baby, won't you take a chance?
Say that you'll let me have this dance
Well, let's dance, well, let's dance..."
"Let's Dance" was a 1962 hit for Chris Montez, reaching number two in the UK and number four in the US.
David Bowie sang the song with his first band and two decades later gave it a nod with his own song, and album called "Let's Dance".
11. "Dear Prudence"
Answer: The Beatles
The Prudence in the 1968 Beatles song "Dear Prudence" was a sister of Mia Farrow - Prudence Farrow.
The song appeared on "The White Album", but was not released as a single.
John Lennon was the main writer. He met Prudence Farrow while the Fab Four were in India.
12. "Someday We'll Be Together"

"Someday We'll Be Together" was first recorded by Johnny & Jacky in 1961, to little success.
In 1969 it was revived when Motown faced the break-up of Diana Ross & The Supremes. This was their last hit, before Ross embarked on her solo career.
The song topped the Hot 100 and was a number 13 in the UK.
13. "The Girl from Ipanema"

"The Girl from Ipanema" was originally a song in Portuguese by the Brazilian duo Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes. English lyrics were later written by their producer, Norman Gimbel.
It reached number five in the US and number 29 in the UK for Jobim and Stan Getz in 1963.
14. "Spanish Harlem"
Answer: Ben E. King
Phil Spector and Jerry Leiber wrote this about a section of New York noted for its large Hispanic population. Leiber claimed he had the idea before Spector got involved.
This was the first single from Ben E. King after he left The Drifters. He took it to number ten on the Hot 100 in 1960.
Aretha Franklin had a number two US ht with the song in 1971.
15. "Silence Is Golden"
Answer: The Tremeloes
In 1967, The Tremeloes took "Silence Is Golden" to the top of the charts for three weeks in the UK and to number 11 on the US Hot 100.
The Four Seasons featured the song as a B side in 1964.
The Tremeloes were signed by Decca Records in England - you know, the company that rejected The Beatles.
In all The Tremeloes had 14 UK top 20 hits, with just two in the top 20 of the Hot 100.
