Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which 'N Sync album was their first to hit number one on the Billboard 200 albums chart (in 2000)?

Answer: No Strings Attached

Topping the charts for eight consecutive weeks in 2000, 'N Sync's second album, "No Strings Attached" was also a record-breaker (for the entire 2000s decade) selling almost two and a half million units in its first week and becoming one of the band's most popular albums. Led by their strong first single, "Bye Bye Bye", the quintet battled for the top with the Backstreet Boys who would chart with "Black & Blue" for two weeks later in the same year.

Other songs from "No Strings Attached" to chart included "It's Gonna Be Me" and "This I Promise You".

The album went eleven times platinum in the United States while "It's Gonna Be Me" topped the Billboard Hot 100 in the same year. 'N Sync's third album, "Celebrity", peaked at number one on the Billboard 200 the following year for a single week while Justin Timberlake would chart solo in 2006.

The group's first album peaked at number two on the same chart.
2. For three weeks in 2001, which artist topped the Billboard 200 with an album featuring the soulful song "Fallin'"?

Answer: Alicia Keys

Awarded the Grammy Award for Best R&B Album in 2002 (and four other awards), Alicia Keys' "Songs in A Minor" was her debut CD and featured one of her biggest hits, "Fallin'", which hit number one on two different Billboard charts (though it appeared on three). Keys continued to make music through the decade following up her first release with "The Diary of Alicia Keys" in 2003.

This won her another three Grammies and, likewise, debuted at number one on the charts in the same year. Her third time (with "As I Am" in 2007) was also a charm; it hit number one and went triple platinum in the United States.

In 2009, Keys' fourth album, "The Element of Freedom", debuted at number two and never reached the top position in the U.S. (while topping the UK Singles Chart instead).
3. Ending 2002, Shania Twain dominated the charts for five consecutive weeks with what album containing the song "I'm Gonna Getcha Good"?

Answer: Up!

Her fourth album release, "Up!" went eleven times platinum in the United States (reaching diamond status). This wouldn't beat the total sales for her previous album, "Come On Over", which doubled the total sales of "Up!" many years earlier. "Up!" also included the singles "Up!", "Ka-Ching!", and "Forever and For Always". Unlike her previous CDs which infused pop and country styles, Twain released several different versions of "Up!" which included different discs for pop versions, country versions, and 'international' versions of songs. Because of her enduring popularity and contribution to the medium, Twain was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2011; she's from Timmins, Ontario.
4. Breaking free of Destiny's Child, which singer released "Dangerously in Love" in 2003, topping the charts during its first week?

Answer: Beyonce Knowles

Released before the remaining members of Destiny's Child parted ways, "Dangerously in Love" put Beyonce on the solo scene at the same time she was setting out to pursue an acting career (with "Austin Powers in Goldmember"). The lead single from the album, "Crazy in Love" (featuring then-romantic interest, Jay-Z), ended up getting significant radio airplay and topped the Billboard Hot 100 for two months. "Dangerously in Love" won five Grammies while her next two albums, "B'Day" and "I Am... Sasha Fierce", ended up debuting at number one on the Billboard 200 and going multi-platinum around the world.
5. In 2004, Green Day topped the Billboard 200 with an album that would later become the basis for a Tony Award winning Broadway musical. What was its name?

Answer: American Idiot

Winning the Grammy for Best Rock Album in the same year, "American Idiot" contained the singles "Holiday", "American Idiot", "Wake Me Up When September Ends", and "Boulevard of Broken Dreams", catapulting the band into their most popular album release to date.

It went six times platinum in the U.S. and was later adapted into a Broadway musical of the same name winning two Tony Awards and occasionally featuring lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong. The album was critically acclaimed and was cited by some as the best rock album of the 2000s decade.

Many of the songs from the album were also featured on the 2005 live release "Bullet in a Bible". Their next album, "21st Century Breakdown", ended up receiving similar accolades in 2009 (including the Grammy and chart-topping).
6. Topping the charts for three weeks, what band released "X&Y" (containing the song "Speed of Sound") in 2005?

Answer: Coldplay

"X&Y" wasn't Coldplay's biggest album or its best-received but the fans didn't hold back; the album was one of the longest-lasting chart-toppers of the year and the songs "Speed of Sound", "Fix You", and "Talk" became popular hits for the UK band. Although it was nominated for a Grammy the following year for Best Rock Album (losing to another chart-topper from U2). Coldplay would follow-up with the 2008 album "Viva La Vida (or Death and All His Friends) which would also peak at number one in the U.S. and go multiplatinum.
7. In 2006, Evanescence went platinum with their second album. What was the name of this CD that spent a week in the Billboard 200's number one position?

Answer: The Open Door

Coming off two Grammy wins from their debut in 2004 with the album "Fallen", Amy Lee and her bandmates set out to work on their second release, "The Open Door" which allowed them to create more emotional pieces. The album was well-received and earned them an additional Grammy nod in 2007.

It contained singles such as "Call Me When You're Sober", "Lithium", "Sweet Sacrifice", and "Good Enough", the first of which was the only one to hit the top ten on the Billboard Hot 100. It went platinum shortly thereafter.
8. A surprising number one album for 2007, which indie band's fifth CD, "We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank", ended up going gold in the same year?

Answer: Modest Mouse

A difficult feat for an indie rock band, Modest Mouse debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 in 2007 with their expected-to-be-concept album "We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank". Their previous album, "Good News for People Who Love Bad News", was released in 2004 and gained popularity from the song "Float On" (bringing the album to number 18 on the Billboard 200).

The band's main single from the newer album, "Dashboard", charted on three different Billboard charts. Notably, the band released a popular EP of B-sides in 2009 including one song which was to have a video directed by Heath Ledger before his death.
9. Although Radiohead released an album digitally in 2007, the physical release of their CD in 2008 brought them to the number one spot in the U.S. What was the name of the album?

Answer: In Rainbows

"In Rainbows" was a unique case. After Radiohead split from their long-time record company, EMI, they self-released the album online and stated that listeners could pay or not if they didn't want to. After a month and a half of their own self-leaked CD, they announced a physical release in January and it still sold.

After their little experiment, over a million people had downloaded their music (with two in three paying in full) and they still topped the UK and U.S. album charts upon retail release and received critical acclaim. Singles from this album included "Jigsaw Falling into Place" and "Nude".

Their next album, "The King of Limbs", also received an unorthodox online release before a physical copy was available.
10. A true summer album, which group's "The E.N.D." album took the top spot on the Billboard 200 twice in 2009?

Answer: The Black Eyed Peas

A follow-up to their ever-popular "Monkey Business" album, "The E.N.D." brought the band's new, more electronic sound to the forefront with futuristic new beats and melodies. During the summer of '09, "I Gotta Feeling" played on radios worldwide and became one of the most popular party songs of the year.

It hit number one in over a dozen countries and became the then-top-selling digital release ever. It also charted on Billboard's 2009 and 2010 year-end charts. "The E.N.D." contained the songs "Boom Boom Pow", "Imma Be", and "Meet Me Halfway".

In early 2011, the four members returned with a similar sounding, similarly popular release titled "The Beginning".
