Bible Names: Starting & Ending With Same Letter Quiz

A while back I compiled a quiz in the standard format featuring Bible names starting and ending with the same letter. I thought I would update it by compiling a quiz in the match format with new information. The NKJV was used for this quiz.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Mother of Seth (Genesis 4:25)

Answer: Eve

In addition to being the mother of Cain and Abel, Eve was also the mother of Seth, as per Genesis 4:25. (She is also known as the Mother of All Living.)

According to Scripture, Seth was born after Cain killed Abel and is seen as a replacement for Abel.

In addition to being the second person named in the Bible, Eve is the first person to have a name starting and ending with the same letter. The first person named in the Bible is Adam, of course.
2. King who was despised by his brothers (1 Samuel 17:28)

Answer: David

David might have been a much adored king of Israel, but the truth of the matter is his brothers at one time despised him.

Even after the prophet Samuel anointed David to become king, he remained an outcast among his brothers.

For example, Eliab, David's oldest brother went as far as to accuse David of neglecting his shepherding duties just to witness a battle between the Israelites and the Philistines. (See 1 Samuel 17:28) This even though David would deliver a spectacular victory for the Israelites when he soundly defeated Goliath, a Philistine giant, in a one-on-one battle.

David tells of his pain of being treated as an outcast, stating in Psalm 69: "I have become a stranger to my brothers, and an alien to my mother's children."
3. Known for singing and dancing after the Israelites crossed the Red Sea (Exodus 15:20-21)

Answer: Miriam

Miriam was the sister of Moses and Aaron and assisted her two brothers during the forty-year-long exodus of the Israelites out of Egypt.

She is perhaps best known for her joyous singing and dancing after God miraculously parted the Red Sea, enabling the Israelites to safely travel to the other side. However, when the Egyptian army attempted to cross the sea in pursuit of the Israelites, the parting of the water came to an abrupt end and the army was wiped out.

The singing and dancing of Miriam is documented in Exodus 15:20-21.
4. Credited with writing 31st chapter of Proverbs

Answer: Lemuel

Lemuel is the writer of the 31st chapter of Proverbs, but little is known about the man.

Some people believe he was none other than Solomon, who wrote the vast majority of the contents in the Book of Proverbs. Others, however, believe he was King Hezekiah and still others believe he was a foreign king.

Other contributors to the Book of Proverbs include Agur (Chapter 30) and "the Wise Men" (Chapters 22:17 through 24:34) with the content introduced as "Sayings of the Wise."
5. One of a handful of Bible characters whose name is a palindrome (1 Samuel 1:2)

Answer: Hannah

In addition to having a name starting and ending with the same letter, Hannah has the distinction of being one of a handful of people in the Bible whose name is a palindrome. In other words, the name is the same when spelled backwards.

Hannah was the mother of Samuel, a noted prophet and judge of Israel. She gave birth to Samuel after being unable to conceive, but that all changed when she fervently prayed to God. For details see 1 Samuel.
6. Original name of a queen of Persia

Answer: Hadassah

Esther, a queen of Persia, was originally known as Hadassah, as per Esther 2:7.

Scripture tells of Esther being an orphan who was raised by her cousin Mordecai.

Incredibly, Esther, a Jew, would become queen of Persia and then play a key role in preventing Haman from carrying out a diabolical plan to kill all the Jews in the empire. At the time, the Persian empire stretched from India in the east to Ethiopia in the west.

The empire at the time was ruled by King Ahasuerus, also known as Xerxes in some Bible versions.
7. A wife of David and mother of Adonijah, a man who almost became king (2 Samuel 3:4)

Answer: Haggith

Haggith is the correct answer. However, little is known about Haggith apart from the fact she was one of a number of wives of David and her son Adonijah attempted to peacefully become king.

However, Adonijah's bid failed largely due to the conspiring of Bathsheba and Nathan behind the scenes, who wanted Solomon to become king.
8. The ruler of demons (Matthew 12:24)

Answer: Beelzebub

Many Christians believe Beelzebub is an alternate name for Satan.

In Matthew 12:24 in the NKJV, the Pharisees accused Jesus of casting out demons with the assistance of Beelzebub, "the ruler of demons."

In His response to the Pharisees, Jesus said it makes absolutely no sense Satan would provide assistance in driving out demons.

In Verse 26 in the NKJV, Jesus goes on to state: "If Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then will his kingdom stand?"

The Pharisees did not have an answer to Christ's question.
9. Believed to be wife of Philemon (Philemon 1:2)

Answer: Apphia

There is no smoking gun, but Apphia is believed to be the wife of Philemon, a recipient of a letter from the apostle Paul.

In Philemon 1:1-2 in the NKJV, Paul writes: "To Philemon our beloved friend and fellow laborer, to the beloved Apphia, Archippus our fellow soldier, and to the church in your house."

As a result it is assumed Apphia was the wife of Philemon. From the same verses, it is also assumed Archippus was their son.
10. Elderly lady filled with joy upon seeing baby Jesus (Luke 2:36)

Answer: Anna

Anna was a prophetess of "great age" who was filled with joy when she saw the infant Jesus.

According to Luke 2:38, Anna spoke about Jesus "to all those who looked for redemption in Jerusalem."

Scripture also tells of Anna being the daughter of Phanuel and not departing from the temple, but serving God "with fastings and prayers night and day."
