Bible Names That Start & End With Same Letter, #2 Quiz

A while back I compiled a quiz in the standard format featuring Bible names starting and ending with the same letter. I thought I would update it by compiling a quiz in the match format with new information. The NKJV was used for this quiz.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Father of Joshua (Exodus 33:11)

Answer: Nun

Nun is mentioned by name no less than thirty times in the Old Testament, using the NKJV.

However, in every instance, he is simply identified as the father of Joshua. No further information is given about the man.

In addition to having a name that starts and ends with the same letter, Nun's name is a palindrome. In other words, it is spelled the same backwards as it is spelled forward.
2. A prophet who conspired behind the scenes to have Solomon crowned king (1 Kings 1:11)

Answer: Nathan

Nathan is perhaps best known for rebuking David after he had an adulterous affair with Bathsheba and then orchestrated the death of her husband, Uriah. (See 2 Samuel 12:1-14)

Perhaps not as well known is the fact he played a key role in working behind the scenes with Bathsheba to ensure her son Solomon would become king rather than Adonijah. Adonijah was the son of Haggith, another one of David's wives.

Details about their manoeuvring behind the scenes can be found in 1 Kings 1.
3. Great-great grandson of David and third king of Judah (1 Kings 15:9)

Answer: Asa

Asa was a great-great grandson of David and he ruled as king over Judah for 41 years.

His father was Abijah, his grandfather was Rheoboam and his great grandfather was Solomon.

Generally speaking, the Bible describes Asa as a good king, pointing out he removed idols from the land, destroyed pagan altars, and brought the people back to God. (See 1 Kings 15:9-24.)

However, Asa is criticized in Scripture for relying on human doctors instead of God when he became seriously ill near the end of his life. (See 2 Chronicles 16:12.)

In addition to having a name that starts and ends with the same letter, Asa is a palindrome. In other words, it is spelled the same backwards as it is forward.
4. Cruel king of northern Kingdom of Israel (2 Kings 15:14)

Answer: Menahem

Menahem became king of Israal after he killed Shallum, as per 2 Kings 15:14. It's interesting to note Shallum had become king after he had killed Zechariah.

According to Scripture, Menahem's reign was filled with brutality.

For example, when there was resistance to his reign by the people of Tiphsah, Menahem completely destroyed the town, killing all the people and even ripping open pregnant women. (2 Kings 15:16)
5. King who saw a sundial miraculously go backwards ten steps (2 Kings 20:8-11)

Answer: Hezekiah

Incredibly, Hezekiah saw a sundial go backwards by ten steps as part of a confirmation from God that fifteen years were being added to his life, even though he was seriously ill.

Hezekiah was king of Judah at the time and he had been fervently praying to God for a restoration of his health, according to Scripture.

Details about the miracle of Hezekiah's restored health and the sundial going backwards can be found in 2 Kings 20:8-11 and Isaiah 38:7-8.
6. Exiled from Rome because he was a Jew (Acts 18:2)

Answer: Aquilla

Aquila and his wife Priscilla were exiled from Rome because they were Jews.

The couple were tentmakers and after their exile they met up with Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles who was also a tentmaker.

Scripture goes on to tell of Aquila and Priscilla playing a key role in the early church by effectively spreading the Gospel message.
7. Member of early church in Rome who Paul describes as "beloved" (Romans 16:9)

Answer: Stachys

Stachys is the correct answer. However, not much is known about him apart from the fact he was a member of the early church in Rome and Paul describes him as "beloved." See Romans 16:9 for details.

In the 16th Chapter of Romans, Paul extends greetings to a number of believers in Rome with many of them being ordinary Joe and Jill Christians.
8. Mother of Timothy (2 Timothy 1:5)

Answer: Eunice

Eunice was the mother of Timothy, a young and timid worker in the early church.

Eunice was a Jewish woman who was married to a Greek man who is not identified. They lived in Lystra.

According to Scripture, Eunice was the daughter of Lois.

In 2 Timothy 3:14-15: Paul reminds Timothy to remember his mother Eunice and grandmother Lois for teaching him about the Scriptures from his youth.
9. Man who converted the Ethiopian eunuch (Acts 8:26)

Answer: Philip

Philip the Evangelist is noted for converting an unnamed Ethiopian eunuch to Christianity as the two of them rode along in a chariot.

According to Scripture, the eunuch was a man of "great authority under Candace the queen of the Ethiopians, who had charge of all her treasury."

For details about the conversion of the Ethiopian, see Acts 8:26-40.

It should be pointed out the Philip in this case is different from the Philip who was one of the original twelve disciples. To differentiate from the disciple, he is often referred to as Philip the Evangelist.
10. Fearless worker in the early church (Acts 15:22)

Answer: Silas

Silas was a fearless worker in the early church who often labored alongside Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles.

One of my favourite Bible stories tells of Paul and Silas being stripped naked by a mob in Philippi, severely beaten and then tossed into a prison cell.

Incredibly, Scripture tells of Paul and Silas singing hymns at midnight.

Then something even more amazing happened: an earthquake struck and loosened the chains of all the prisoners but Paul and Silas did not make a break for it.
Rather they stayed behind and converted the jailer to Christianity.

For details, see Acts 16:16-34.

In some Bible versions, Silas is known as Sylvanus, yet another Biblical name that starts and ends with the same letter.
