Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

The parable of the "Good Samaritan" is one of the best-known New Testament stories and appears in the tenth chapter of Luke's Gospel. In the verses leading up to the parable, Jesus is addressed by a "lawyer" (in this context a teacher of Jewish law), who asks him how he can obtain eternal life.

Jesus responds by asking the lawyer what the Jewish law says, and the lawyer quotes some words from the Book of Deuteronomy: "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself". Jesus replies approvingly, saying that if the lawyer follows these precepts, he will have the eternal life he seeks. "And" says the lawyer, "who is my neighbour?"

Jesus replies by telling the parable of the "Good Samaritan", which teaches a simple but profound lesson about taking care of those who need our help. The people who you would expect to help the man who has been robbed and beaten up - the priest and the Levite (a member of the Jewish tribe of Levi) - don't help, but "walk by on the other side". The one who does come to his assistance is a Samaritan - a non-Jew and native of Samaria, and a member of an ethnic group which was traditionally an enemy of the Jews. The key point is not just that he is a kindly person, but that he is someone who would not normally be expected come to the aid of a Jew.

The moral lesson therefore links clearly to the words of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount, as recorded in chapter five of Matthew's Gospel:

"Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you." (Matthew 5 verses 43-44, KJV).
