Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Derived from the Quran and the rulings of Islamic scholars, what name is given to Islam's legal system?

Answer: Sharia

In the Islamic tradition, Sharia (also Sharia law) is religious law. The Quran (Islam's central religious text) and fatwas (legal opinions of Islamic scholars) form the basis of Sharia law. The literal meaning of Sharia is "the clear, well-trodden path to water", a metaphor for "the pathway to be followed", stressing the importance of water in desert environments.

Of the other answers, the Hajj is a pilgrimage to Mecca, or a pilgrim who has completed the Hajj; Ramadan is a month of fasting in the Islamic calendar; Astaghfirulah (alternatively "Aghfir Allah") is an Islamic expression: "I seek forgiveness from God" or "I ask Allah for forgiveness".

2. Jesus walked on the water. But where?

Answer: Sea of Galilee

Jesus walking on the water is one of Jesus's miracles as mentioned in the New Testament. It appears in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and John (but not in the Gospel of Luke) and happens when the disciples cross the Sea of Galilee by boat. During their trip they suddenly see Jesus walking across the water towards them.

They were scared as they thought they saw a ghost, but Jesus told them not to be afraid.

3. Why do Jewish holidays start at sundown?

Answer: The Torah says each day starts at sunset

All Jewish holidays begin at sundown on the evening before the date usually specified on modern calendars. The reason for this is an interpretation of the Old Testament, where the creation story found in the book of Genesis describes each day as "... and there was evening, and there was morning--the .... day". Thus, Jews interpreted this language to mean that the "day" starts when night starts and not at the middle of the night. Holidays also end at sunset.

For example, the Yom Kippur holiday includes a 24 hour fast starting at sunset and ending at sunset the next day.

The advent of Christianity slowly changed the celebration of holidays and the concept of a full day from sunset to sunset to midnight to midnight.

6. In Exodus, the Lord told Moses to make a laver of brass for Aaron and his sons to wash their hands and some other body parts in water. Which precisely?

Answer: Feet

From the Bible: Exodus 30:17-21: "And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Thou shalt also make a laver of brass, and his foot also of brass, to wash withal: and thou shalt put it between the tabernacle of the congregation and the altar, and thou shalt put water therein. For Aaron and his sons shall wash their hands and their feet thereat: When they go into the tabernacle of the congregation, they shall wash with water, that they die not; or when they come near to the altar to minister, to burn offering made by fire unto the LORD: So they shall wash their hands and their feet, that they die not: and it shall be a statute for ever to them, even to him and to his seed throughout their generations."

Aaron acquired the priesthood from God, along with his sons and any of their descendants.
Priests can't enter in a holy place and attend the altar without having stopped at the laver and washing these parts of their bodies. The laver has an upper bowl to wash the hands and a lower one for the feet. Usually, running water is used rather than still water.

7. Petruchio says, in Shakespeare's "Taming of the Shrew" (II.1), "If she deny to wed, I'll crave the day when I shall ask the banns, and when be married." What are "the banns"?

Answer: announcement of impending marriage

The banns of marriage are a formal public announcement of the intent to marry. In Western Christendom, they were required for many centuries by church law to permit canonical or civil objections to be raised well in advance of the wedding. In England, Lord Hardwicke's Act of 1753 required that the banns be read aloud in church on the three Sundays preceding the nuptials. Remnants of the older practice exist in Roman Catholic, Anglican (Episcopalian) and some Lutheran churches. Antique wording often attends their modern use, such as "I publish the banns of marriage between (name) and (name).

This is the (first/second/third) time of asking. If any of you know cause or just impediment why these two persons should not be joined together in Holy Matrimony, ye are to declare it." Ensuing silence is occasionally followed by applause.

8. In which of these religions are leaders sometimes referred to as shepherds?

Answer: Christianity

Christian leaders are sometimes called pastors, which is derived from the Latin word for shepherd. This imagery has its roots in the teachings of Jesus who called himself the Good Shepherd and his followers, his sheep. The Bible also records Jesus as asking his disciples to feed his sheep as a way of asking them to guide and counsel the new Christians after Jesus' death and resurrection.

10. According to Mark 12:25 (KJV), what happens to people in heaven?

Answer: They are as the angels which are in heaven.

Mark 12:25: "For when they shall rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage; but are as the angels which are in heaven." Jesus said this after getting questioned about what if a woman was married, but her husband died, and she remarried, and that husband died, etc.

They said, "Whose wife shall she be?" Jesus said no one is married in heaven, just like the angels are also not married. There's no mention of what songs say about St. Peter "at the golden gate" or "I'll cling to the old rugged cross and exchange it someday for a crown."
