He was perhaps most popular in the Middle Ages when he was regarded as one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers. Statues are erected of Saint Christopher to guard against calamity.

Thomas Cranmer was appointed by Henry VIII as the archbishop of Canterbury in 1533, making him the first Protestant to hold the position. Before Cranmer, the archbishop position was always held by a Roman Catholic. Cranmer's appointment came during Henry VIII's break from the Catholic Church, when the king sought to establish the Church of England, largely because the pope refused to annul his marriage to Catherine of Aragon.

As archbishop, Cranmer played a key role in supporting the English Reformation and helping to shape the new Protestant faith in England.
