Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Andrew

Saint Andrew has a long list of patronages including the countries of Scotland, Russia and Romania. If you know your Bible, though, you should remember that Andrew and his brother, Peter, were fishermen when they were called by Jesus to become 'fishers of men'. Both Andrew and Peter were among the first apostles who lived and worked alongside Jesus.

The photo shows a net full of fish, to point you towards the fishermen (and fishmongers) for whom Andrew is also the patron saint.
2. Cecilia

Saint Cecilia was of Roman birth and was martyred in the third century. She had vowed to retain her virginity. Having been married to a pagan man, she manged to persuade him not to consummate the marriage and converted him and his brother to Christianity. They were both martyred as a result - her husband is remembered as Saint Valerian. Cecilia herself was soon to meet her death too.

Cecilia is said to have 'sung to the Lord in her heart' and is depicted with musical instruments, especially an organ, as shown in the photo. She is primarily known as the patron saint of musicians.
3. Matthew

Matthew is another of the apostles and also wrote the first Gospel of the New Testament of the Bible, so he is described as an Evangelist. He was working as a tax collector in Capernaum when called to follow Jesus, according to the Gospel bearing his name.

The connection with money has made him the patron saint of accountants, tax collectors and bankers, all associated with money, although Matthew would never have seen the Euros in the photo or, indeed, any paper money.
4. George

Saint George is well known as the patron saint of several countries, including England and Georgia. He is believed to have been born in what is now Turkey, and became a soldier in the Roman army. George was martyred for his religious beliefs in the early fourth century as part of the main Diocletian persecution of Christians. The legend of him defeating a dragon is one of the best known stories about saints.

Because of his background, among Saint George's patronages are soldiers and cavalry, and the photo clue shows both.
5. Stephen

Saint Stephen is widely accepted as the first Christian martyr, dying in Jerusalem in 36 CE. He was a deacon of the church, with his story being told in the Acts of the Apostles in the Bible. Stephen was stoned to death, with a prayer asking forgiveness for his accusers being quoted as his final words. His feast day is memorable, falling on the 26th December, just one day after Christmas Day.

The manner of his death is reflected in his patronage of stonemasons and bricklayers, with deacons included, due to his occupation. The photo shows a pile of stones as the hint.
6. Luke

Luke is credited with writing the Gospel bearing his name, making him an Evangelist, and the book immediately following, recording the Acts of the Apostles. He is mentioned as having been one of the fellow travellers of Paul, who refers to him as a 'beloved physician'. Luke himself makes it clear that he did not know or meet Jesus personally and gathered information from those that had.

As he was said to be a physician, there is no surprise that he is the patron saint of doctors and surgeons, although the medical instruments pictured would not have been available in his lifetime.
7. Crispin

Crispin is believed to have had a twin brother, called Crispinian, and the two of them were early Christian martyrs in the third century. They were beheaded in Rome during the reign of Emperor Diocletian in one of his early persecutions of Christians. Crispin's name may be familiar to those who have read or seen Shakespeare's 'Henry V' as the king invokes his name before the Battle of Agincourt.

Crispin supported himself by shoe making and is the patron saint of cobblers and shoemakers as well as other types of leather workers. The photo shows someone carrying out the trade associated with him.
8. Paul

Saint Paul, originally known as Saul, is one of the best known saints of Christianity. Having been vehemently anti-Christian originally, he had a dramatic conversion when he was temporarily blinded, an event described in the Book of Acts. Paul's life takes up several chapters of the same Book and he is also credited as the author of many of the Epistles of the New Testament where he offers support and encouragement to the fledgling Christian churches.

Paul's trade was a tentmaker, one he turned to even during his various travels when he needed to earn money. As a result, he is the patron saint of tent and rope makers, as well as for missionaries. The tent in the picture is rather more colourful than any found in Biblical times.
9. Joseph

Saint Joseph appears in the Bible as the husband of Mary and foster father of Jesus. He is depicted as God-fearing and responding to the messages he receives, such as the one telling him to flee to Egypt, and accepting that Mary had been impregnated by the Holy Spirit. Joseph is described as a carpenter in the Bible.

As a worker with his hands, Saint Joseph is the patron saint of workers and carpenters in particular. He is also the patron saint of fathers. The photo shows a box of woodworking tools.
10. Christopher

The name Christopher means 'Christ-bearer' and Saint Christopher is said to have carried Jesus, during his childhood, across a river. There is not much known about him, although he is believed to have been martyred in around 250 AD. Some sources refer to him as a legendary figure as he did not become widely known until seventh century and has not been officially recognised by the Catholic church.

Because of the story of his carrying of the Christ child, Saint Christopher is widely known as the patron saint of travellers, including the drivers shown in the photo clue.
