Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

The miracle of Jesus turning water into wine appears in John chapter two and is accepted by Christians as the first of the miracles. Jesus was attending a wedding where the hosts had run out of wine, and he transformed water into wine at His mother's request. Capernaum is an important place in the life of Jesus and is often said to be where he lived during his adult life. It was a fishing village on the shores of the Sea of Galilee and the place where several miracles took place. These include the healing of Peter's mother-in-law and the healing of the paralyzed man who was lowered through the roof - both of these are described in three of the Gospels, in Matthew, Mark and Luke. The one I picked appears in both Mark and Luke. Jesus was preaching in the synagogue when he was interrupted by an evil spirit inside a man. The demon was banished at Jesus's command, astonishing those around Him who had not seen his powers demonstrated previously.

The story of the widow of Nain, a village, appears only in the Gospel of Luke. Jesus and his followers come across a funeral procession, which was established to be that of the only son of a widow. The loss of her son will leave the widow destitute, and Jesus takes pity on her, bringing the young man back to life. Bethany is a town near Jerusalem and is the site of another miracle of life restored to someone who had died. Lazarus was the brother of Mary and Martha and had been dead for four days when Jesus arrived. His sisters believed that Lazarus had been dead too long to be revived, but Jesus proved them wrong. The story of this miracle is told only in the Gospel of John.

Another miracle only John describes is the healing of a paralyzed man at the Pool of Bethesda. The pool is said to have healing properties, in some versions particularly when the waters are disturbed, but the man, who has been paralyzed for nearly forty years, is unable to reach the pool. Jesus cures him instantly by telling him to 'take up your bed and walk'. Since this is another miracle performed on the Sabbath, the action brings Jesus into conflict with the leaders of the Jews since work is forbidden on that Holy day. Matthew, Mark and John all include the miracle of Jesus walking on the Sea of Galilee. He had sent the disciples to go fishing on the sea while he stayed behind to pray. A storm had arisen, and the disciples were afraid but then saw Jesus walking on the surface of the sea towards them. When Jesus reaches the boat, the wind drops and the boat returns safely to shore. Matthew expands the story to include Peter's failure to emulate the feat, through fear and lack of faith.

Bethsaida is another place with strong associations to Jesus. According to the Gospel of John, Jesus recruited Peter, Andrew and Phillip from there and He was on his way to the town when the miracle of walking on water took place. The miracle of the feeding of the 5,000, described in all four Gospels, is placed near Bethsaida by Luke. The healing of the blind man is specifically placed in Bethsaida in the Gospel of Mark. Jesus restores the man's sight in two stages - after the first, the man describes men as appearing 'like trees', with a second touch fully restoring his vision. Mark, Matthew and Luke all tell the story of an exorcism in Gadara with the location sometimes shown as Gerasa or Gergesa. Whichever spelling is used a man, sometimes called Legion, is possessed by demons who ask Jesus to send them into a herd of pigs when he casts them out from the man. Jesus does this, leading to the the pigs racing into the sea and drowning.

The final two miracles included in this quiz took place near the end of Jesus's life and ministry. The story of Bartimaeus appears in both Mark and Luke, with minor differences such as Jesus leaving Jericho in one version and arriving in the other. Either way, Bartimaeus calls out to Jesus, calling him the 'Son of God' and asking for his sight to be given back to him. The final miracle credited to Jesus took place in the Garden of Gethsemane during the arrest of Jesus. The story is covered in all four Gospels, although only John names the victim as Malchus and Simon Peter as the disciple who caused the injury. Malchus is one of the men sent to arrest Jesus and has his ear cut off in an attempt to prevent Jesus being taken. Jesus heals the ear by touching it, according to Luke.
