The order of the first three Popes on the list were Benedict XV (1914 to 1922), Pius XI (1922 to 1939), Pius XII (1939 to 1958). Benedict was born Giacomo Paolo Giovanni Battista della Chiesa and played in role in negotiating peace during World War I. Ambrogio Damiano Achille Ratti was the birth name of Pius XI. He instituted the Feast of Christ the King and was known for the Catholic faith's taking a anti-Nazi stand. Pius XII was the first Italian Pope born after the unification of Italy.
St. John XXIII (1958 to 1963), St. Paul VI (1963 to 1978), John Paul I (1978-1978) , and John Paul II (1978 to 2005) came next in the 20th Century. John XXIII played a role in the resolution of the Cuban Missile Crisis. St. Paul VI was the first Pope who traveled beyond Italy in over 150 years. During his time, the Church continued their condemnation of artificial insemination. John Paul I was only Pope for 33 days before his death at the age of 65. Pope John Paul II was Pontiff for 26 and a half years. During his era, the Polish born Pope, Karol Jozef Wojtyła, canonized 483 saints and was the first to ride in the popemobile.
The last three Popes were Benedict XVI (2005 to 2013), Francis (2013 to 2025), and Pope Leo XIV who was chosen on May 8, 2025. Pope Benedict was the first German born pope in almost a century. He lived to be 95 years old. Pope Francis was born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Argentina. He was the first Pope born in the Southern Hemisphere, first born in South America, and the first Jesuit Pope. Pope Leo XIV was born in Chicago, Illinois in the USA and his birth name was Robert Francis Prevost.
