The Greek side took the lead through Govou's goal, but Barca were level just two minutes later through talisman Lionel Messi. Govou had joined Panathinaikos after a decade playing professionally for Lyon, whose youth ranks he had come through. Group D consisted of Barcelona, Panathinaikos, FC Copenhagen and Rubin Kazan. All three of Barca's opponents had won their domestic leagues the previous season. Barcelona, as expected, won the group with 14 points while FC Copenhagen finished second with 10 points. Rubin Kazan finished third and while this meant they were eliminated from the Champions League, they were allowed to compete in the knockout stages of the Europa League. Panathinaikos didn't win a single game and finished last.

Barcelona scored 14 goals in their six group games. Messi, who was top scorer in the tournament with 12 goals, was Barca's top scorer in the group phase with six goals. Pedro Rodriguez scored three times, netting in the home opener against Panathinaikos and netting twice in Athens in the return fixture. Villa scored in both of Barcelona's first two games, netting in the thrashing of Panathinaikos and scoring the equaliser in Kazan that sealed a 1-1 draw.

Iniesta did not score in the group phase, but did put Barcelona ahead in the first leg of their quarter-final against Shakhtar Donetsk.

Henry had left Barcelona in the summer of 2010 to join MLS team New York Red Bulls. He was with Barcelona from 2007 to 2010 and played an integral role in the all-conquering Barcelona team of 2008-09.

Barca won their group so were pitted against a runner-up from the group stage. Arsenal, who were runners-up to Shakhtar Donetsk in Group H, were drawn alongside Barca. In the first leg at the Emirates Stadium, the visitors took the lead with a David Villa goal. However, goals from Robin van Persie and Andrey Arshavin late in the game allowed the Gunners to take a 2-1 lead to the Camp Nou for the second leg.

In the second leg, Messi scored at the end of the first half to give Barcelona the lead. However, Arsenal went back ahead on aggregate early in the second half due to a Sergio Busquets own goal. Two goals in two minutes, a Xavi goal in the 69th minute followed by a Messi penalty, saw Barca take a 4-3 lead on aggregate. Another goal for Arsenal would have seen them through on away goals, but it wasn't to be.

Both matches had different referees. Nicola Rizzoli from Italy refereed the first leg at the Emirates Stadium while Swiss official Massimo Busacca took charge of the return leg. While both sides reached the knockout stage in 2011-12, they didn't face each other. Arsenal lost to AC Milan while Barcelona dismantled Bayer Leverkusen.

While Shakhtar Donestsk unquestionably faced an uphill task, they had earned plenty of plaudits for their performances during the 2010-11 Champions League. After winning a group that contained Arsenal, winning five of their six group games, the Ukrainian side then thrashed Roma 6-2 over two legs to book a spot in the quarter-finals. The first leg at Camp Nou was a thrashing, with Barca winning 5-1 with five different goalscorers.

The writing was on the wall when Iniesta scored after two minutes, while Dani Alves made it 2-0 before half-time. Gerard Pique made it 3-0 just after half-time, but Rakitskyi gave Shakhtar hope on the hour. That hope lasted one minute as Seydou Keita scored almost immediately after to make it 4-1. Xavi scored in the 86th minute to complete the 5-1 rout. The tie was effectively over when the second leg was played at Shakhtar's Donbass Arena. Messi's goal on the stroke of half-time was the only goal in the second leg. Barcelona won the tie 6-1 on aggregate.

Stark was a FIFA listed referee from 1999 to 2014. He was also a Bundesliga referee from 1994 to 2017, when he reached the maximum age allowed for referees in Germany's top flight. He also works as a bank teller. Stark refereed three matches at the 2010 World Cup.

Messi and Ronaldo's rivalry peaked in the years that they played for Spain's biggest two clubs and competed in El Clasico matches on a regular basis, but the two had clashed when Ronaldo was playing for Manchester United. Ronaldo's United defeated Barca in the Champions League semi-finals in 2008, while Messi scored in the 2009 final as Barca defeated United. Ronaldo joined Real Madrid the summer after the 2009 final.

Guardiola's Barcelona had been dominant since he had taken over in 2008. They won a continental treble in 2008-09, and were only denied a chance to repeat their European triumph when they lost to Jose Mourinho's Inter Milan team in the semi-finals in 2009-10. Inter won their third European Cup (and first since 1965) with a 2-0 win over Bayern Munich in the final. After the victory, Mourinho left to join Real Madrid. The rivalry between Guardiola and Mourinho was fierce, peaking in August 2011 during a Spanish Super Cup match when Mourinho poked the eye of Barcelona's assistant coach Tito Vilanova during a confrontation.

The two sides met four times between 16 April 2011 and 4 May 2011. The two sides drew 1-1 in the first meeting, a La Liga clash. Four days later, Madrid defeated Barca 1-0 in the Copa del Rey final. Barca would avenge this loss in the Champions League, however. A Messi brace late on saw Barca win 2-0 in the first leg at the Bernabeu, meaning a 1-1 draw in the second leg was enough to seal a place in the final.

The first two European Cup finals held at Wembley saw Benfica lose on both occasions, falling to AC Milan in 1963 and Manchester United in 1968. In 1971, Wembley hosted for a third time as Ajax's Total Football conquered the European game for the first time.

In 1978, it hosted for a fourth time as Liverpool defeated Club Brugge to win their second European Cup. 1992 saw the old site host the final for a fifth and final time as Barcelona defeated Sampdoria. Perhaps fittingly, the host venue for the 2011 final was the same venue where United and Barca won the European Cup for the first time.

Dimitar Berbatov, United's top scorer in 2010-11 with 21 goals, was not included in the matchday squad for the final. United's number one keeper, Edwin van der Sar, played his last professional match in the final. United had three English players on the bench in the form of Chris Smalling, Paul Scholes and Michael Owen. Scholes came on in the 77th minute. Nemanja Vidic, who was named captain ahead of the 2010-11 season, played in his usual spot at centre back in the final.

Barcelona won 3-1, but the result did not accurately reflect Barca's dominance in the game. They dominated possession and always looked in control. On 27 minutes, Xavi passed to Pedro to who scored to make it 1-0. Seven minutes later, United equalised against the run of play after a clever one-two between Wayne Rooney and Ryan Giggs led to the former scoring with a neat finish into the corner. Barca continued to dominate in the second half, with Patrice Evra narrowly denying a Messi attempt off the line at 52 minutes. Two minutes later, Messi ensured he didn't miss as he fired home from 20 yards out. In the 69th minute, Villa also scored from a similar distance as he curled a shot into the top corner.

Barcelona controlled the game in almost every way. Barca had 12 shots on target while United scored their only shot on target. Barca had 63% possession and never looked like surrendering their lead in the second half. By the time the 2011 Champions League final was over, pundits and analysts were starting to rank Messi as one of the greatest players of all time and Barcelona as one of the best club teams the game had ever seen. Sir Alex Ferguson, manager of Manchester United from 1986 to 2013, called Pep Guardiola's Barcelona the best team he ever faced. United's two central defenders in the 2011 final, Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand, agreed.

Abidal started at left back in the 2011 Champions League final despite having a tumour removed from his liver two months earlier. The football world rallied around the Frenchman, with Real Madrid and Lyon players wearing shirts wishing Abidal well before their last 16 tie in the Champions League (Abidal played for Lyon between 2004 and 2007). Abidal played the full 90 minutes of the final.

Puyol was Barcelona captain, while Xavi had led the team during the 2011 final as Puyol was on the bench. As a gesture to acknowledge his recovery, Puyol gave the armband to Abidal and allowed him to lift the trophy first instead. Abidal was tearful when he spoke about the gesture after the game.
